Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation

Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation Until all homes are safe... The most tragic aspect of Jessica’s death is that she had a plan to leave her abusive relationship, but had nowhere safe to go.

The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation (JMMF) was established on January 15, 2012, in response to the tragic death of Jessica Martel, a 26 year old woman who was murdered by her husband in front of their children in Morinville, Alberta. In efforts to prevent such tragedy and to provide support to women and their families in similar situations, the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation aims to serve v

ictims of domestic violence in Morinville, Sturgeon County and surrounding areas. Although tragedy was the driving force behind the creation of the JMMF, it was established as a result of a perceived need for a safe house within the community. Further exploration has validated this need and has provided additional drive for achieving JMMF's goal of establishing a safe house.

Rural shelters play a critical role in supporting women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Recent funding cuts to rural women’s shelters are deeply concerning. When shelters are not adequately funded, women and children may have fewer safe places to go when they need safety most.

“With our sister shelters in rural communities receiving funding cuts, I worry about other women like Jessica Martel not having a place to go, because the shelters are not adequately funded,”

Shelters and community resources save lives.

Thankful Thursday 💜

Today we want to thank the Canadian Progress Club Silks for having our founder, Lynne, speak at their Talk to Me Derby event this week.

The group presented JMMF with a $2,000 donation, and we are truly grateful. Every contribution helps us keep showing up for the people who need us most.

Thank you, Canadian Progress Club Silks!
