Synchronized skating, or "synchro" is a specialized discipline of skating involving groups of eight or more skaters performing various group formations and maneuvers. The objective is for the team to perform as one unit executing circles, blocks, lines, wheels and intersections in unison to the music, while demonstrating quality edges, power and flow. SkateCanada’s SynchroSkate program includes a
number of Synchronized Skating categories which accommodate skaters at any age and skill level. Last season we had a Beginner Team (Ages 4-9); an Elementary Team (Ages 9-14); and a Juvenile team (Ages 14 and under). We are hoping to have enough skaters this season to have a Pre-Novice team (18 and under) as well. Skaters are placed on teams by the coach depending on their age and their ability. What kind of time commitment is synchronized skating? If you join Synchro, you will participate in weekly skills lessons and routine practice. Teams will also compete in 2 Synchronized Skating Competitions, the year-end Ice Show held in March, and possibly at a couple of hockey games for practice in front of a crowd. Who are the coaches for synchro? Tricia Hayward is the head coach for our synchro teams. What kind of fundraising should I expect? Our Synchro Club sells the Moosomin Community Calendar as our major fundraiser. Each skater/family will be given a call list for renewal calendar orders and will assist in calendar delivery. We also sell tickets on an IPAD. If you choose not to be a part of our fundraising campaign there will be a buy-out option of $200 per skater. Are there other costs I should expect other than the Registration Fee/Fundraising? Your child will need to purchase one skating dress that will be ordered to match their team’s music. Tights, a team T-shirt, and “blacks” (black pants and skirt) are also required. Season wind-up party costs are sometimes charged, depending on our fundraising profit. Otherwise, personal travel and accommodation expenses for the two competitions are the only other expenses you should have. What if I’m not sure if I’d like to join; can I try it first to see if it’s for me? You can still register for the season. The first two practices (Oct. 14 and Oct. 21) are open for anyone to try. You will be refunded all but a $50 try-out fee (which covers ice time, coaching expenses, and insurance for those two sessions) if you decide not to join. *There will NOT be any refunds after Oct 21st.
