Heading to the Metropolis Identities Summit in Niagara Falls? Come say hi! The Canadian Council for Refugees will be there.

Most people in Canada support immigrants and refugees, but that support is being tested. We're here to make it visible.

Today Alberta is holding a referendum that matters to the whole country . One of the questions on the ballot asks if the province should charge people without permanent status a fee for their family’s use of health care and education. In plain terms, a child’s doctor visit could come with a bill, depending on a parent’s paperwork.

Most of us start from the opposite idea, that this country works better when everyone in it counts.

From every part of the country, let’s make sure Albertans know they aren’t deciding this alone, and that the immigrants and refugees in their province have the rest of Canada behind them.

Our Canada includes immigrants and refugees. We’re better together.

-------------------

To everyone in Alberta standing up for their neighbours this week: you are not alone.

We’re Better Together is a national campaign built on a simple idea, that this country works better when everyone in it counts. Thousands of people across Canada have already put their name to it. We feel the same this week of the referendum.

Albertans vote Monday. The rest of the country is paying attention, not to tell Alberta what to do, but to stand with the people these questions are about.

Our Canada includes immigrants and refugees. We’re better together.

———-

Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action #93 asks that newcomers learn, as part of settlement, about Indigenous peoples, treaties, and residential schools. That's not a footnote to our work, it's part of it.

Refugees and newcomers are welcomed onto land that was never surrendered. Today we're thinking about what it means to actually live that responsibility, not just cite it, and holding space for Survivors and the children who never came home.

---------

A powerful new podcast series from journalist Brigitte Bureau, "Les murs: le périple des migrants vers le Canada," follows the real journeys and obstacles migrants face on the way to Canada, from the US border to the aftermath of the Roxham Road closure.

CCR and several of our member organizations are part of this story, including TCRI's Stéphan Reichhold, who speaks to how the closure pushed people toward smugglers and greater risk.

"It is entirely normal and predictable that a baby is sometimes born partway through the process." — Gauri Sreenivasan, Co-Executive Director, Canadian Council for Refugees

Ottawa has quietly ended a policy letting refugees sponsor children or partners not declared on their original applications, without explanation. Resettlement takes years, and families change during that wait.

The fallback option, a humanitarian and compassionate application, now takes over a decade to process with roughly 50% approval odds.

What happens to the families caught in between?

CCR joins over 250 labour, civil liberties, faith, climate, migrant, refugee, human rights and community organizations across Canada to stand with international students from Portage College and defend migrants’ right to protest without fear.

What happened in Calgary matters to all of us. Migrants and refugees are our co-workers, neighbours, students and teachers, congregation members, union members, organizers and activists. They must be able to exercise their rights to peaceful assembly, and protest without putting their future in Canada at risk. We are better Together! Read the open letter here: https://migrantrights.ca/RightToProtest/

"Migrants and refugees in Canada already live the uncertainty of temporary or precarious status. They must be able to organize, protest and defend their rights without fear of putting their ability to remain here on the line. Immigration enforcement must not follow people into spaces where they are peacefully organizing for their rights. This goes to the heart of what our democracy means. The Canadian government should fix the injustice that brought these students into the streets and make sure immigration enforcement never becomes the response to migrant organizing."

- Gauri Sreenivasan, Co-Executive Director, Canadian Council for Refugees

250+ organizations across Canada are standing with Portage students and defending migrants’ right to speak out, organize and protest. Migrants are part of our movements. We will not allow immigration enforcement to be used to frighten people out of speaking up for their rights. Sign the petition O...
