Grannies for Good Montreal

Grannies for Good Montreal The aim of Grannies for Good is to raise funds and help to create solidarity between Canadian grandmothers and our sister grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa.

African grandmothers are caring for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign raises funds in Canada for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s work with community level organizations in Africa that provide grandmothers and the children in their care with the necessities of life, including counselling, nutrition, shelter, school supplies and income generation activit

The Stephen Lewis Foundation is appalled by the freeze on U.S. international assistance funding and the “stop-work” orders issued to The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funding recipients. Clinics, organizations and hospitals have been told they can’t even distribute the live-saving medications they already have in stock if those medications were purchased with U.S. funds. This means that every day, hundreds of thousands of people, including children, will not receive their anti-retroviral treatment which keeps AIDS at bay and stops further transmissions of HIV. It means people will die.

We extend our heartfelt solidarity to everyone affected by this disastrous and murderous decision made by the Trump administration.

We have assured our community-led partners that they have complete flexibility with their Stephen Lewis Foundation funding to pivot their programs to meet the most urgent needs in their communities.

We call on other funders to act swiftly to communicate maximum flexibility to their partners and to step in where possible to fill funding gaps.

The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign
When the AIDS pandemic swept across the continent of Africa, it took the lives of nearly an entire generation – 35 million perished – which left their children alone and vulnerable. With little or no support, it was the grandmothers of Africa who stepped in to care for these children.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in 2006, in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to raise millions of children orphaned by AIDS.
Grandmothers and grandothers in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have rallied in response, creating a dynamic movement. They raise funds in their communities to support the life-enhancing programs run by African grandmothers and the community-based organizations who support them.
The grandmothers movement amplifies the voices and expertise of African grandmothers, and shows the world that leadership by older women is critical in reclaiming hope and rebuilding resilience across communities.
This isn't charity - it's solidarity.

Our latest fundraising event, Sing for Joy, was a joyful success! Our thanks go out to the entertainers Craig Morrison and Samantha Borgal who had the crowd singing along with all the old favourites. Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined us and donated generously so that Grannies for Good can continue to raise funds and champion the life-enhancing programs run by African grandmothers and the community-based organizations who support them.
