Entrepreneurs du Commun

Entrepreneurs du Commun The collective seeks to stimulate critical reflection around the "Canadian Memorial to the Victims of Communism" planned to be inaugurated in Ottawa.

Entrepreneurs du Commun is calling for a National Monument to the Victims of Liberty. This call for proposals seeks to stimulate critical reflection around the Canadian Memorial to the Victims of Communism, which is planned to be inaugurated in Ottawa in 2015. The selected project submissions for the Monument to the Victims of Liberty will be presented in Fall 2015 in collaboration with the artist

-run centre AXENÉO7 in Gatineau. The aim of Monument to the Victims of Liberty is to question the Conservative government's ideological instrumentalization of the concept of liberty in the lead-up to next year's federal elections. According to the Harper government: “N***sm, Marxist-Leninism, today, terrorism – they all have one thing in common: the destruction, the end of human liberty.” (Stephen Harper, 2014). Faced with such gross historical confusions and ideological simplifications, we pose the following questions: Are there victims of liberty? If so, who are they? Do totalitarian forms of liberty exist? What makes the Harper government's particular brand of “Canadian freedom” so distinctive? Can we make public the lapse between how such "freedom" is defined and how it is executed?

"The controversial Victims of Communism memorial in downtown Ottawa will no longer feature the names of specific individuals after federal officials determined a significant number could be linked to the N***s."

Historians raised alarms years ago. Ottawa changed course only after the memorial opened.
