The Montreal Irish Monument held its Annual General Meeting last night, where members reviewed the organization's accomplishments over the past year and the significant progress made toward our ultimate goal: the creation of a permanent commemorative site at the Black Rock.

The meeting highlighted advancements in planning, partnerships, advocacy, fundraising, and public engagement, all of which continue to move this important project forward. Members also had the opportunity to look ahead to several exciting developments, including progress on the DNA project and the evolution of the site's design. We look forward to sharing more details on these initiatives with our members, supporters, and the broader public in the months ahead.

Together, we remain committed to preserving the memory of the more than 6,000 Irish immigrants who lost their lives during the 1847 typhus epidemic and are commemorated at this historic site.

Finally, thank you to our members, volunteers, donors, and supporters. Your dedication, generosity, and belief in this project are at the heart of everything we do and play an essential role in bringing this vision to life. ☘️

Le Monument irlandais de Montréal a tenu hier soir son assemblée générale annuelle, au cours de laquelle les membres ont passé en r***e les réalisations de la dernière année ainsi que les progrès importants accomplis vers notre objectif ultime : la création d’un site commémoratif permanent à la Roche Noire.

La rencontre a permis de souligner les avancées réalisées en matière de planification, de partenariats, de représentation, de financement et de sensibilisation du public, autant d’efforts qui contribuent à faire progresser ce projet d’envergure. Les membres ont également eu l’occasion de découvrir plusieurs développements prometteurs, notamment les progrès réalisés dans le cadre du projet d’ADN et l’évolution du concept d’aménagement du site. Nous avons hâte de partager davantage d’informations sur ces initiatives avec nos membres, nos sympathisants et le grand public au cours des prochains mois.

Ensemble, nous demeurons déterminés à préserver la mémoire des plus de 6 000 immigrants irlandais qui ont perdu la vie lors de l’épidémie de typhus de 1847 et qui sont commémorés en ce lieu historique.

The Montreal Irish Monument was delighted to join many other members of the community at the launch of Ireland’s International Sports Diplomacy Initiative at the Canadian Olympic House.

The event brought together an inspiring panel of leaders from the worlds of sport, community, and public life, including former NHL player and Stanley Cup champion Pat Flatley, 2026 Montreal St. Patrick’s Day Parade Queen Sarah Crotty, Annie Larouche, who made sports history as the first female president of a major professional sports franchise in Montreal when she took the helm of the Montréal Alliance, and Eric Myles, Chief Sport Officer at the Canadian Olympic Committee.

The evening was introduced by Irish Minister of State Neale Richmond, who spoke thoughtfully about the unique role sports diplomacy can play in bringing people together across cultures, communities, and borders. His remarks highlighted how sport can help foster understanding, create connections, and remind us of our shared humanity.

Thank you to the The Embassy of Ireland and all those involved for an engaging and inspiring discussion on the power of sport to build bridges and strengthen international relationships.

Le Monument irlandais de Montréal a eu le plaisir de se joindre à de nombreux membres de la communauté à l’occasion du lancement de l’Initiative internationale de diplomatie sportive de l’Irlande à la Maison olympique du Canada.

L’événement a réuni un panel inspirant de leaders issus des milieux du sport, de la communauté et de la vie publique, notamment Pat Flatley, ancien joueur de la LNH et champion de la Coupe Stanley, Sarah Crotty, Reine du Défilé de la Saint-Patrick de Montréal 2026, Annie Larouche, qui a marqué l’histoire du sport en devenant la première femme à présider une franchise sportive professionnelle majeure à Montréal à la tête de l’Alliance de Montréal, ainsi qu’Éric Myles, directeur des sports du Comité olympique canadien.

La soirée a été introduite par le ministre d’État irlandais Neale Richmond, qui a livré une réflexion éloquente sur le rôle unique que peut jouer la diplomatie sportive pour rapprocher les peuples au-delà des cultures, des communautés et des frontières. Ses propos ont mis en lumière la capacité du sport à favoriser la compréhension mutuelle, à créer des liens durables et à nous rappeler notre humanité commune.

We were honoured yesterday to welcome Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, and John Conlan, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Secretary General of Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs, to the Black Rock.

During their visit, they learned about the significance of this sacred site—the resting place of approximately 6,000 Irish immigrants who died during the Great Famine of 1847—and the progress being made toward the future Montreal Irish Monument commemorative site. We are grateful to the Government of Ireland and the Embassy of Ireland in Canada for their continued support in helping preserve and share this important chapter of Irish and Canadian history. The Black Rock stands not only as a memorial to those who perished, but also as a testament to the tens of thousands who survived, settled in Canada, and helped shape Montreal, Quebec, and Canada.

Also pictured are His Excellency John Concannon, Ambassador of Ireland to Canada, Jenny Quinn, Deputy Head of Mission, and Elisabeth O'Higgins, Third Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland.

Representing the Montreal Irish Monument Foundation were Fergus Keyes, Kelley O'Rourke, Vivian Doyle-Kelly, and Esmé Cavanaugh.

Nous avons eu l'honneur d'accueillir hier à la Roche Noire Neale Richmond TD, ministre d'État chargé du Développement international et de la Diaspora, ainsi que John Conlan, chef des opérations et secrétaire général adjoint du ministère irlandais des Affaires étrangères.

Au cours de leur visite, ils ont découvert l'importance historique de ce lieu sacré — dernier lieu de repos d'environ 6 000 immigrants irlandais décédés durant la Grande Famine de 1847 — ainsi que les progrès réalisés dans le développement du futur site commémoratif du Monument irlandais de Montréal. Nous remercions sincèrement le gouvernement de l'Irlande et l'Ambassade d'Irlande au Canada pour leur soutien continu à la préservation et à la mise en valeur de cet important chapitre de l'histoire irlandaise et canadienne. En mars dernier, nous avons reçu un engagement important du gouvernement du Québec par l’entremise du Fonds Signature Métropole (FSM), relevant du Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation du Québec.

Au cours des trois prochaines années, le gouvernement du Québec investira 600 000 $ afin de soutenir le projet du Monument irlandais de Montréal — une reconnaissance de l’importance nationale et provinciale du site du Black Rock, la plus grande fosse commune au Canada et un symbole durable du patrimoine irlandais du Québec.

Cet appui important contribuera à faire avancer les initiatives d’éducation, la mobilisation du public et le développement du futur site commémoratif, afin que cette histoire et cette mémoire continuent d’être transmises aux générations futures.

We’re deeply honoured to share a major milestone for the Montreal Irish Monument project. ⚜️🍀

This March, we received a landmark commitment of support from the Government of Quebec through the Fonds Signature Métropole (FSM), part of the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation du Québec.

Over the next three years, the Government of Quebec will invest $600,000 to help advance the Montreal Irish Monument project — recognizing the national and provincial significance of the Black Rock site, Canada’s largest mass grave, and an enduring symbol of Quebec’s Irish heritage.

This important support will help expand education, public engagement, and the development of the future commemorative site, ensuring these stories and this history continue to be remembered for generations to come.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Government of Quebec and to everyone who helped make this partnership possible.

What a Green Season it’s been! 🍀

A huge congratulations to the entire Irish community—this year’s celebrations were vibrant, meaningful, and full of momentum.

The Montreal Irish Monument was proud to take part in so many special moments: from the Embassy’s St. Patrick’s gathering—where our project was mentioned alongside remarks by Prime Minister Mark Carney—to three incredible parades in Hudson, Montreal, and Quebec City.

We also had the pleasure of attending the annual St. Patrick’s Society Ball and Luncheon, the Irish Person of the Year Breakfast, and hosting our own fundraising concert with The Reel Shambles and Underground Divas.

Across these events, it was inspiring to see the Montreal Irish Monument project recognized and supported time and time again.

This is truly an exciting time to be an Irish Quebecer. 💚

Toutes nos félicitations à la communauté irlandaise ! Les célébrations de cette année ont été dynamiques, riches de sens et pleines d'enthousiasme.

Le Monument irlandais de Montréal a été fier de participer à de nombreux moments mémorables : de la réception de la Saint-Patrick à l'ambassade – où notre projet a été mentionné aux côtés du premier ministre Mark Carney – aux trois magnifiques défilés à Hudson, Montréal et Québec.

Nous avons également eu le plaisir d'assister au bal et au déjeuner annuels de la Société de la Saint-Patrick, au petit-déjeuner de la personne irlandaise de l'année et d'organiser notre propre concert-bénéfice avec The Reel Shambles et Underground Divas.

Tout au long de ces événements, il a été inspirant de voir le projet du Monument irlandais de Montréal reconnu et soutenu à maintes reprises.

C'est vraiment une période merveilleuse pour être un Québécois d'origine irlandaise. 💚

Yesterday, the City of Montreal officially recognized and celebrated the profound contributions of the Irish community to the life and history of our city.

From the arrival of over 75,000 Irish immigrants during the 19th century, to their role in building iconic infrastructure like the Lachine Canal and Victoria Bridge, to the vibrant community that continues to shape Montreal today — this proclamation is a powerful acknowledgment of a lasting legacy.

It also honours the memory of those commemorated at the Black Rock and looks ahead to the future Montreal Irish Monument Site, set to open in 2029.

As we enter the next century of the Montreal St. Patrick’s Parade, we are proud to see this history recognized at the highest level.

Hier, la Ville de Montréal a officiellement souligné les contributions profondes de la communauté irlandaise à la vie et à l’histoire de notre métropole.

De l’arrivée de plus de 75 000 immigrants irlandais au XIXe siècle, à leur rôle dans la construction d’infrastructures emblématiques comme le canal de Lachine et le pont Victoria, jusqu’à la communauté dynamique d’aujourd’hui — cette déclaration reconnaît un héritage durable.

Elle rend également hommage aux victimes commémorées au Black Rock et se tourne vers l’avenir avec le Parc du Monument irlandais de Montréal, dont l’ouverture est prévue en 2029.

Alors que nous entamons un nouveau siècle du défilé de la Saint-Patrick de Montréal, nous sommes fiers de voir cette histoire reconnue officiellement.

What an incredible day at the Hudson St. Patrick’s Parade, presented by the Soulanges Irish Society! ☘️✨

The Montreal Irish Monument team had such a wonderful time celebrating alongside this vibrant community—especially from our float with the Canadian Irish Migration Preservation Network and GRÁINNE.

Special thanks to Graeden Staley and his team (GSM Construction) for constructing and driving the float, and to Manning Construction for the flatbed loan. Thank you to Karen Birdgenaw for the Black Rock creation and artwork.

It was truly heartwarming to see the Irish spirit so strong—every float, every performance, and every participant was absolutely impressive.

So proud to be part of such a connected and thriving community 💚 See you tomorrow at noon in Montreal!
