A personal message from Yazan, founder of VoxHaven

On Saturday night in Berlin, a van drove into a crowd during the closing celebrations of Christopher Street Day.

One woman was killed. Twenty-nine people were injured, several critically.

I felt sick reading this.

As someone who experienced homophobia in my home country, Pride events once represented hope for me. I used to watch them on TV and wish I could be there one day.

Those crowds were the light at the end of the tunnel. Proof that somewhere, q***r people could be in the streets openly, together and with nothing to hide.

The fact that this is still happening in 2026 is a painful reminder that our safety cannot be taken for granted. We still have so much work to do to protect the right of q***r people to live openly and safely, for this generation and for those who come after us.

This is also part of why I am building VoxHaven.

Because q***r people need places where they can connect, support one another, share their stories, discover community and know they do not have to carry everything alone.

At times like this, q***r community matters more than ever.

On this day in 1992, we lost Marsha P. Johnson.

A Black trans activist, drag queen, and self-described "saint of Christopher Street," Marsha stood at the heart of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

She was present during the Stonewall uprising in 1969, marched in the very first Pride the following year, and later co-founded STAR with Sylvia Rivera- offering food, shelter, and chosen family to homeless q***r and trans youth at a time when few others would. During the AIDS crisis that devastated her community, she once again stepped forward, caring for those who were sick and advocating

alongside ACT UP.

Her impact continues to shape the fight for equality today.

Princess Diana is often remembered for her compassion, and on what would’ve been her 65th birthday, one moment stands out above all — her visit to an HIV/AIDS ward.

In the 1980s, misinformation and fear around HIV fueled deep stigma, especially toward LGBTQ+ communities. Many wrongly believed the virus could be spread through touch, leaving patients isolated and afraid.

In 1987, Princess Diana quietly challenged that fear by shaking hands with HIV patients at Britain’s first purpose-built HIV/AIDS unit — without gloves — showing empathy at a time when it was rare and powerful.

At first, none of the 12 patients wanted to meet her, worried about stigma and media attention. Eventually, one terminally ill man agreed — a moment that became symbolic of compassion and change.
