Montreal Council of Women

Montreal Council of Women The MCW is affiliated with both the Provincial Council of Women of Quebec (PCWQ) and the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC).

For more information see below and check out our webpage: www.montrealcouncilofwomen.ca In 1893, Lady Aberdeen, President of the International Council of Women (ICW), founded both the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC) and the Montreal Council of Women (MCW). In the beginning, the MCW chose to focus on social reform over political reform- with its growing membership focusing on improving a

ll aspects of the lives of Montrealโ€™s women and their families. They advocated for higher education for women and career opportunities along with better working conditions, and maternal and child care. Today, the Council, a non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian organization continues this work of seeking to improve conditions and opportunities for women, families, and the community at large-and conversely defending citizens when protected civil rights and opportunities are eroded or threatened. A vibrant and pro-active, diverse coalition of organizations and individual members, the Montreal Council of Women plays an important role as a voice for all women in Montreal and the surrounding areas. The Council encourages informed political decision-making and advocates for the well-being of society, through education, consultation, and cooperation and does so in partnership with both the Provincial Council of Women of Quebec (founded in 1999) and the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC), and through them with the International Council of Women (ICW) which represents the National Councils of Women in more than 70 countries. The NCWC was incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1914, and given national historic significance status on April 30th, 2001 by the Government of Canada for its role in Canadian women's history. Currently, in Canada, the Council of Women network includes 5 Provincial Councils, 10 Local Councils, such as ourselves, and multiple and diverse National, Provincial and Local Organizations. The NCWC has accreditation with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and regularly attends meetings of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Each year, MCW confers this honour on a woman whose work represents an exceptional contribution to a designated field, as chosen by the Executive of the Council. In addition to excellence in her field, the recipient is recognized for her meaningful contributions to the community and for serving as a role model and source of inspiration to others.

At a time when artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly and reshaping how we learn, work, and live, MCW is especially pleased to recognize a leader whose work speaks directly to this moment. Indra Kubicekโ€™s contributions to AI literacy, STEM education, youth engagement, and responsible digital citizenship reflect thoughtful, forward-looking leadership with real impact.

We look forward to celebrating this remarkable leader with you!

THIS DAY 108 YEARS AGO:
ON MAY 24, 1918, THE MAJORITY OF FEMALE CITIZENS AGED 21 AND OVER BECAME ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN FEDERAL ELECTIONS, regardless of whether they had attained the provincial franchise. In July 1919, women gained the complementary right to stand for the House of Commons, although appointment to the Senate remained out of reach until after the Persons Case of 1929.
Sadly, the right to vote federally remained even further from reach for Asian Canadian women and Aboriginal women, who were finally enfranchised in 1948 and 1960, respectively.
NOTE: Women in Canada who lobbied for the right to vote were called 'suffragists' and they did so in a non-militant manner. In England our sisters, in the fight for suffrage, were divided between the peaceful suffragists and the more aggressive 'suffragettes' - many of whom were imprisoned and force fed if they refused to eat. The colours of the movement were Green, White, and Violet, which were highly significant, according to Geoffrey Munn of the Antiques Roadshow UK, and stood for "Give Women Votes." Indeed he states that women could show allegiance to the fight and to fellow suffragists by wearing jewellery in these colours.

What does peace actually look like?

๐Ÿ”ต Women at the table.
๐Ÿ”ต Women taking up roles in leadership.
๐Ÿ”ต Women whose safety is non-negotiable.

Because you canโ€™t build trust, inclusion, or reconciliation without them.

This day, weโ€™re reminded that is only as strong as the women who shape it. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

DId you know that the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC) www.ncwcanada.ca established the VON 129 years ago? This wonderful organization is still going strong and provides vital healthcare. Congratulations to the VON on your 129th Anniversary!

โ€œYoung mothers and children had died, whilst husbands and fathers were traveling many weary miles for the medical and nursing aid which might have saved them.โ€

This was how Lady Ishbel Aberdeen โ€” not just the wife of Canadaโ€™s governor general, but also a philanthropist and a womenโ€™s rights advocate who would be the first woman to address Canadian Parliament and the first woman in Canada to receive an honorary degree โ€” recounted the stories sheโ€™d heard at the 1896 meeting of the National Council of Women, a group that she founded only three years prior. The Council was discussing the consequences of Canadaโ€™s dangerous shortage of nurses, doctors and hospitals โ€” especially in remote areas.

The National Council passed a resolution asking Lady Aberdeen to establish an order of visiting nurses in Canada. The order would be called the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), to honour the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoriaโ€™s ascent to the throne, and Lady Aberdeen would become its inaugural president.

Lady Aberdeen recruited Charlotte Macleodโ€”a Canadian trained by Florence Nightingaleโ€”to set up the organization and standardize training.

I especially recall my motherโ€™s gratitude toward the VON. After our family came to Canada and settled in White Rock, B.C. โ€” then still a very small town โ€” she gave birth to her fourth child while my father was away serving in the Second World War. She never forgot the kindness and generous assistance the VON provided during that difficult time, and supported the organization annually thereafter.

๐ŸŽ‰ It is VON Week!

This yearโ€™s theme is Powered by Compassion.

For generations, and through constant change, VON has helped people live safely at home and in their communities where they want to be
Compassion is what drives our staff, volunteers, and partners every day. It fuels the care we provide through nursing, personal support, and community programs across provinces. ๐Ÿ’™

Powered by strength, determination, and yes, maybe a little bit of caffeine, we are proud to continue this work together.

Most of all, we are powered by compassion.
