Brain Canada Brain Canada is a national non-profit organization that enables and supports excellent, innovative, paradigm-changing brain research in Canada
(1)

Brain Canada is a national non-profit organization that develops and supports collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research across the neurosciences. Through partnering with the public, private and voluntary sectors, Brain Canada connects the knowledge and resources available in this area to accelerate neuroscience research and funding and maximize the output of Canada’s world-class scientists and researchers. Brain Canada was created to address the twin challenges of increasing the scale of brain research funding in Canada and widening its scope to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration to produce insights for treating multiple disorders. Brain Canada is the new vision for Canadian brain research—the voice for the brain and the grouping of brain disorders, raising awareness about their prevalence and impact on individuals, families, the economy and society. But most important, through the research we are funding, we are giving hope to the millions of Canadians who are directly or indirectly touched by diseases, disorders, and injuries of the brain, spinal cord and nervous system.

Finding the right treatment for depression can take time, and the longer that takes, the harder it is to imagine that things can get better. Dr. Gifuni wants to shorten that wait for young people. His research aims to help teenagers find the right treatment from their very first episode with depression, giving them a real reason to find hope in the treatment process.

Join us for an afternoon of TEDx-style talks about the brain, moderated by Sam Laprade.

🙋‍♀️ If you’re curious about the brain, this event is for you. The talks cover how Canadian research is advancing what we know about brain health and wellness.

After the talks, stay for a reception and poster session. Students from different areas of brain health will be at interactive booths to share their work.

🧠 découvert que les différences liées au s*xe peuvent influencer le rétablissement après une commotion cérébrale;
🧠 constaté que les femmes pourraient tirer davantage profit de l’activité physique;

This , we're proud to share what's possible when s*x and gender are built into research from the start.

Brain Canada, along with its donors and partners, has invested $160.3 million in research and knowledge mobilization that focuses on or considers the impact of s*x and gender on brain health. This investment spans 39 funding programs, 312 research projects, and 20 clinical trials involving more than 4,500 participants.

Thanks to this support, researchers have:
🧠 Discovered that s*x differences can shape concussion recovery
🧠 Found that women may benefit more from being physically active
🧠 Helped inform a more targeted treatment for eating disorders

Each finding moves us closer to care that works for everyone. When research accounts for s*x and gender, the benefits reach patients, families, and the health system. To learn more about women's brain health, visit braincanada.ca

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, currently affecting more than 57 million people worldwide.

In 2024, the Lancet Commission, a group of international dementia experts, identified 14 modifiable risk factors for dementia. They found that addressing these factors could cut your lifetime risk of Alzheimer's or a related dementia by nearly half.

Fourteen risk factors are a lot to keep in your head. So the Weaver Lab at the Krembil Research Institute, UHN, built a simple acronym to help you remember them: ADVICES.

Much about Alzheimer's disease can feel out of our hands. But real hope, and real control, come from what we do each day. Following ADVICES means making lifestyle changes now that meaningfully lower your risk of AD, while building a healthier, fuller life along the way.
