On April 11, 2026, we hosted a SAMAHAN Space where we had a hands-on income tax clinic with the help of our close friend and ally, Jill Hanley, as the workshop facilitator. The participants learned about the tax filing process, the different types of tax slips, and what to do if they were in a situation where they didn’t receive their T4s from their employers. They also learned how to file their own taxes with the use of the uFile software.

Earlier during the day, Jasmin de la Calzada, Chairperson of PINAY Quebec, participated in a panel discussion titled "Voices of the Filipino Community in Quebec: Memorializing the Past, Building the Future." This conference was organized by Southeast Asia Studies Montreal to highlight the community that was built by the Filipino diaspora in Montreal over a span of decades.

During her talk with other panel speakers, she shared her personal journey to Canada and her experiences as a student organizer, which ultimately led her to join PINAY Quebec. She emphasized how the skills she acquired from theatre workshops helped her contribute to the organization earlier on.

On Saturday, March 7, 2026, we hosted a moving film screening of “Modern Heroes, Modern Slaves” to honour International Working Women’s Day. After the screening, we held an open discussion where attendees shared personal experiences and insights related to the documentary’s themes. This inspiring conversation provided a safe space for reflection on individual journeys and the importance of advocating for women's rights and social justice. The event boosted community participation and prompted a meaningful dialogue about the ongoing struggles and successes of women worldwide. One participant shared that navigating immigration and work programs alone sometimes felt like being in limbo, but she appreciated the support from groups like PINAY and Migrante Qc. The migrant workers realized that they could only overcome their challenges by uniting their strength.

Each day, thousands of people leave countries like the Philippines to seek work abroad. They work as nannies, domestics, clerks and labourers for low wages and with few rights. What little money they earn, they send home to their families. This contribution to their country’s economy has prompted the Philippine government to call these contract workers “modern-day heroes.” But that’s only half the story.

Starting from the case of Flor Contemplacion, the Philippine maid hanged in Singapore, to worldwide protests, Modern Heroes Modern Slaves takes a look at the human side of this massive trade in labour: failed marriages, family breakups, and exploitation and abuse at the hands of unscrupulous employers. From the United Arab Emirates to Hong Kong to Canada, local governments rely on contract workers to fill jobs that locals cannot or will not do. When it comes to protecting them from abuse and defending their rights, the workers have to fend for themselves. This Saturday, March 7, 2026, we will host a film screening at our SAMAHAN Space to celebrate International Women’s Day and highlight the struggles faced by migrant women. After the screening, we will hold a discussion where attendees can share their experiences.

On February 7th, approximately 25 individuals gathered at the Immigrant Workers Centre for our SAMAHAN Space in collaboration with Migrante Quebec, which served as a town hall meeting focused on current immigration restrictions and the suspension of the Homecare Worker Immigration Pilots (HCWP). This event aimed to foster collective action and solidarity among those affected, highlighting the importance of coming together as a community rather than facing these challenges in isolation. During the meeting, participants shared their personal experiences and the challenges they encountered while navigating the immigration system. Many expressed concerns about the burdensome costs associated with the immigration process, having paid significant fees that added to their financial stress. Others discussed the complexities and bureaucratic hurdles specific to their professions, revealing how these obstacles not only impact their livelihoods but also their well-being. The conversations highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated response to advocate for fair immigration policies and support for migrant workers. This event represented the initial step in forming a united front to tackle these pressing matters, particularly for those in the migrant workforce who are often marginalized.
