Starting a conversation about your s*xual health with your healthcare provider can be difficult for so many reasons. We may not know where to even begin, what's available to us, what we need. We might not be comfortable answering some of the questions they ask. Some providers may not be very competent in this area. And often as q***r and trans people, healthcare professionals may make assumptions about us, what we do, and the kind of s*x that we have based on our identities not our realities. Or maybe it's that we aren't encouraged to talk about s*x and so when the time comes to have those conversations, how can we?

The Check Me Out Checklist Tool is meant to help put the power back in your hands by giving you the information that you need. You can fill out the questionnaire beforehand then bring the Checklist with you to your next appointment. The Checklist can be an entry point to larger conversations around your s*xual health needs. It can be an easier way to ask for the tests and exams you need.

If you're a healthcare provider, we also encourage you to use it with your patients!

Go to CheckMeOut.ca to use the Checklist Tool and find more information on s*xual health and testing from a Nova Scotian context.

What do you know about STIs?

STI stands for s*xually transmitted infection and is an umbrella term for a variety of conditions. Some examples include Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Viral Hepatitis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, HIV, and so on.

Possible symptoms of STIs include rashes, pain, unusual smells, itching, or even a cold.
It is a good idea to get tested regularly to keep an eye on your own and your partner’s health.

Today is Transgender day of Visibility, a day to both bring awareness to the issues that Transgender people face every day and to celebrate the beauty, joy and brilliance in Trans communities. The Check Me Out team is entirely made up of Trans folks, and we are so happy to be able to highlight trans community members through your community ambassadors.

To be in the spirit today, we wanted to share a quote from Sandy Stone, a musician and Trans advocate, the first Trans woman to be inducted into the American National Women's Hall of Fame. She was joined by 5 other Trans community elders in sharing their experiences, wisdom, and hope for the future of Transgender acceptance in GLAD's article they released earlier today to mark TDOV. We encourage you to give it a read, https://glaad.org/trans-day-of-visibility-a-message-from-6-trans-community-elders/

[Image Description: A digital graphic in honour of Transgender Day of Visibility. The background is a lightly purple tinted photo of five people sitting around a table with a progress pride flag hanging in the back. Overtop is bold text that reads "Today is Transgender Day of Visibility". Below it is a translucent purple box with white text that reads "“Sometimes, when everything looks hopeless, when all we have is just the instinct to show up
then just show up. Just show up. Trust that. After a while, in spite of weariness or numbness or despair, the next step appears, and then the next. And then you begin to truly understand who you are and what your gift is and why you’re here.” -Sandy Stone, Transgender Artist and Advocate, in GLAD’s
Trans Day of Visibility: A Message from 6 Trans Community Elders". On the right hand bottom corner it reads "CheckMeOut.ca".]
