We enter parenting with a massive toolkit of discipline strategies, behavioral charts, and phrases designed to control our children's actions. But the first time you experience a massive meltdown on a public floor, you quickly realize that the wildest storm in the room isn't the child screaming — it's the internal panic, anger, and embarrassment exploding inside your own chest.

Children do not learn emotional control from what we say; they absorb it from how we react. If we respond to their chaos with our own screaming, slamming doors, or cold shoulders, we are teaching them that the only way to handle big feelings is to match them with aggression.

True emotional regulation is caught, not taught. When we pause, take a deep breath, and lower our tone in the middle of a battle, we aren't letting them "get away" with anything — we are lending them our nervous system because theirs is completely overwhelmed.

It is incredibly humbling to realize that the person who needs the most discipline in the house is often the adult. It means looking in the mirror and admitting that our triggers aren't actually about our child's behavior; they are about our own unresolved stress, fatigue, and old emotional wounds.

Parenting isn't a project to manage; it is a mirror. When we focus less on forcing compliance and more on mastering our own reactions, the dynamic in the home shifts naturally. It breaks the cycle of reactive parenting, allowing us to respond with steady intention instead of matching their chaos with our own. ❤️

Happy birthday Theda Bara, goth queen of my dreams.

Bara was an icon of sensuality and the exotic during the silent film era. Born Theodosia Goodman, she began working in New York with her own name before she was cast as a vampire seductress in A Fool There Was (1915). Her magnetic performance made her an overnight success; between 1915 and 1919 she starred in over forty films.

Bara’s dark exoticism and the veils and bangles she wore helped create the archetype of the seductive vamp, but her career was short-lived—as American tastes changed, Bara was passed over in favor of more “wholesome” starlets. A 1937 fire at the Fox Film vaults destroyed most of her movies, yet she endures as a cinematic icon.

Jewish women and gender-expansive people have long been at the forefront of the fight for q***r liberation in the US. As the country turns 250 this year, we highlight their stories:

🔹 Former senator Barbara Boxer earned her reputation as a powerful voice for liberal causes by leading the charge on issues like sexual harassment, the Iraq War, and marriage equality.

🔹 Pearl Hart devoted her life to defending the legal rights of the vulnerable and oppressed, especially women, children, immigrants, and gay men and le****ns.

🔹 Le***an feminist writer Lesléa Newman made history in 1989 with her controversial children’s book, Heather Has Two Mommies. She has also written many books for children, adolescents, and adults on homosexuality, Jewish identity, eating disorders, and AIDS.

🔹 Leslie Feinberg was at the forefront of intersectional theory and coalition building, becoming best known for her experience and politics in transgender liberation.

Who else should we include in this ongoing conversation?

Remembering gender-bending actress Adah Isaacs Menken (June 15 1835–August 10 1868) 🕯️

In her short but remarkable life, Menken was legendary for her defiance of convention. She cropped her black hair and smoked ci******es, and publicly disparaged conventional married life. Menken represented an early example of the cult of personality, blurring her private life with her public persona.

She achieved international fame for her starring role in Mazeppa, where she played a role written for a man. Despite her theatrical fame, Menken really wanted to be known as a writer, penning essays on Judaism for The Israelite weekly paper as well as a collection of poems. Menken died at the young age of 33 after suffering from what may have been tuberculosis.

Born this week in 1906, Tunisian-Jewish actress, writer, and filmmaker Haydée Chikly Tamzali helped lay the groundwork for Arabic and African cinema.

The daughter of Tunisian-Jewish filmmaker Albert Samama Chikly and Italian-born Red Cross nurse Bianca Ferrero, Haydée began working alongside her father as a young girl. At just 16, she starred in Zohra (1922)—a film she also wrote, and one widely considered the first fiction film made in Tunisia.

And she wasn’t just in front of the camera. Haydée edited films, hand-colored footage, and became her father’s creative collaborator and muse.

Actor. Writer. Editor. Filmmaker. At 16! 💙

The World Health Organization has updated how it classifies being transgender, stating that it is not a mental illness. Instead, the term “gender incongruence” is used, and it is placed under sexual health conditions rather than mental disorders. This change reflects a shift in medical and scientific understanding of gender identity.

The reclassification was intended to reduce stigma while still allowing people access to healthcare and support.
