💻📱 What can our RECLAIM Tech Help Desk help you with? A LOT!

Our amazing tech-savvy tutors are here to help! Here are just some of the questions they've been tackling lately:

📧 Email made easier: Sending, replying to, and deleting emails, managing multiple Gmail accounts, and dictating messages with your voice.

📱 Phone troubles: Fixing incoming call issues, organizing apps, managing storage, and learning how to use Samsung, Google Pixel, and iPhone features.

🔎 Getting around online: Scanning QR codes, using Google Search and Google Maps, and navigating websites.

💼 Job search support: Creating accounts on employer websites, uploading resumes, responding to job offers, and using LinkedIn and Facebook to find work.

📄 Files and documents: Creating PDFs, using Google Docs, splitting your computer screen, and safely disconnecting backup drives.

🎬 Apps and extras: Getting started with CapCut video editing, installing Grammarly, and figuring out Gmail and YouTube settings.

🌐 Online services: Navigating Quebec government websites and getting help with online Social Assistance applications.

In recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Day, our Creative Writing group at the Learning Centre explored poetry by Indigenous writers, including Rita Joe’s poem, I Lost My Talk.

Reading her work led to thoughtful discussions about language, identity, and what it means to lose a connection to one’s language and culture.

🌟 A Walk Down Memory Lane – Our Lunch & Learn Series is Back! 🌟

We’re excited to kick off a new season of RECLAIM Literacy’s Lunch & Learn series: A Walk Down Memory Lane! 🕰️📚

For our first installment, we were delighted to welcome Marc Paradis from BGC Dawson, who gave us a fascinating and informative presentation about the history of BGC Dawson, its evolution over the years, and the important work it continues to do in our community.

Marc also shared information about the organization’s current services and programs, highlighting the many ways BGC Dawson supports children, youth, families, and the wider community. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn, reminisce, and connect with the history of an organization that has played such an important role in Verdun.

A big thank you to Marc Paradis and BGC Dawson for helping us begin our new series on such a meaningful note!

We look forward to sharing more stories, memories, and community history throughout the season.

Everyday skills open doors.

Today is Skills for Success Day, a time to recognize the skills that help us learn, work, and navigate everyday life.

Reading, writing, numeracy, digital skills, problem solving, communication, collaboration, adaptability, and creativity and innovation are all part of the picture. These skills build on one another and help us keep learning and adapting as life changes.

As part of the Community Empowerment Literacy Initiative (CELI), TALQ, Literacy Quebec, and PERT have released the CELI 2026 Inventory of English-Language Literacy, Essential Skills & Employment Programs in Quebec, featuring 381 active programs across the province.

It was a busy start to our new session. Tuesday was International Literacy Day, and RECLAIM celebrated with a "lasagna and literacy" luncheon - where over 40 learners, volunteers, partners and senior group participants were in attendance. Carnival games were set up with letters to be won, followed by creating words that earned coupons that could be exchanged for some great 'swag'. Guests left with a snack bag from our “Literacy” candy bar! We were happy to welcome a visit from the Verdun/Lasalle Member of Parliament Mr Claude Guay.
Once the luncheon was over, we made our way over to BGC Dawson for the first day of their after school program. We handed out 53 bags filled with literacy snacks (the snacks spelled out LITERACY) - and a book that the children got to choose (with thanks to Literacy Quebec for helping to provide new books for this event). Finally, a table of new and lightly used books was set up outside of our centre for the public. In all, over 350 books were given out in recognition of International Literacy Day. A huge success. September 8, 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day!

This day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 to remind policy-makers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating a more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society.

Literacy is a basic human right.

Literacy organizations around the world exist to assist with the various literacy needs of their community. For over 45 years, the Yamaska Literacy Council has been supporting the English-speakers in Brome-Missisquoi and Haute-Yamaska.
