La Fédération maritime du Canada a généreusement mis de côté les fonds générés par son récent atelier pour les marins, au cours duquel un panel a été organisé sur l& #39;impact de la technologie sur le bien-être des marins. Capitaine Chris Hall, président-directeur général de la Fédération maritime, a remis ce don très apprécié à Carolyn Osborne, directrice générale de la Maison des marins de Montréal.

The Shipping Federation of Canada generously set aside funds generated from its recent Mariners’ Workshop, where a panel was held on the impact of technology on seafarers’ welfare. Captain Chris Hall, President and CEO of the Shipping Federation, presented this very welcome donation to Carolyn Osborne, General Manager of Mariners’ House of Montreal.

Confronté à une violente tempête sur l'océan Atlantique, d'une force de 11 sur l'échelle de Beaufort, le capitaine Reynaldo M. Lomotan a décidé de ne pas lutter contre les intempéries. Tout en se tenant à distance de la côte, il a coupé le moteur et laissé le navire dériver jusqu'à ce que la tempête passe.

« En tant que marin, vous devez maîtriser vos émotions à tout moment », dit-il. Venant de la chaleur du Brésil, le N/M Aghia Marina a finalement atteint sa destination au Canada, où il a été accueilli par les températures hivernales du port de Montréal. Et bien que le refroidissement éolien ait fait chuter la température à -30 °C, les opérations à bord du navire se sont poursuivies tandis que les membres d'équipage qui n'étaient pas de service ont visité notre centre et se sont rendus en ville pour acheter des provisions, avant de traverser l'océan Atlantique pour rejoindre le prochain port d'escale, Casablanca, au Maroc.

Facing a violent storm on the Atlantic Ocean, rated force 11 on the Beaufort scale, Capitaine Reynaldo M. Lomotan decided not to fight the bad weather. While keeping a distance from the coast, he turned off the engine and allowed the vessel to drift until the storm passed. “As a seafarer, you need to have control of your emotions at all times”, he says. Coming from the heat of Brazil, the M/V Aghia Marina finally reached its destination in Canada, to be greeted by winter temperatures in the Port of Montreal. And although wind chills dropped the temperature to -30°, operations on the ship continued while the crew off duty visited our center and went downtown to buy provisions, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to the next port of call, Casablanca, Morocco.

Après un long voyage depuis la Suède, au cours duquel ils ont passé Noël et le Nouvel An dans les eaux agitées de l'Atlantique, le cargo néerlandais M/V Donaugracht est arrivé au port de Montréal début janvier. En raison du gel sur la voie maritime du Saint-Laurent, la trappe de la cale n'a pu être ouverte qu'après un dégivrage à l'arrivée. Heureusement, l'équipage du navire a eu l'occasion de débarquer et de se reposer dans notre centre. Le capitaine Aleksay Istomin (à gauche) et le chef mécanicien Vengie Samson Junsay (à droite), photographiés ici dans la salle des machines, travaillent ensemble pour affronter les conditions hivernales et assurer la sécurité du navire et de l'équipage.

Pendant la saison hivernale, l'Atlantique Nord produit certaines des vagues les plus grandes et les plus dangereuses au monde en raison des vents violents et des tempêtes puissantes, créant ainsi un environnement difficile qui exige prudence et compétence de la part des marins.

After a lengthy journey from Sweden, during which they spent Christmas and New Years on the harsh Atlantic, the Dutch cargo ship M/V Donaugracht reached the Port of Montreal early January. Due to freezing conditions on the Saint-Lawrence Seaway, the cargo hold hatch could only be opened following de-icing on arrival. Fortunately the ship's crew had the opportunity to go ashore and find rest at our center. Captain Aleksay Istomin (left) and Chief Engineer Vengie Samson Junsay (right), pictured here in the engine room, work together navigating the winter weather and ensuring the safety of the vessel and crew. During the winter season, the North Atlantic produces some of the largest and most dangerous waves in the world due to strong winds and powerful storms, creating a challenging environment that requires caution and skill from mariners.

La Maison des marins remercie le Port pour son soutien tout au long de l'annèe ainsi que pour les merveilleux cadeaux et agreements qui seront si appréciés de nos marins.

La Maison des marins joue un rôle indispensable pour les milliers de marins en escale à Montréal. Loin de chez eux, ils y trouvent accueil, chaleur, connexion avec leurs proches grâce à l'Internet, vêtements chauds, transport vers les terminaux, activités récréatives et bien plus encore.

À l’approche des fêtes nous leur avons remis: ❄️ tuques 🧣 vêtements chauds et 🧴 articles d’hygiène incluant savons, shampoings et produits essentiels.

Merci à toutes les personnes qui ont contribué à cette initiative par leur générosité! Et un immense MERCI à la Maison des marins, pour votre engagement et votre soutien constant aux gens de la mer.

The Mariners' House of Montreal plays an essential role for the thousands of sailors calling at the Port of Montreal. Far from home, they find a welcoming place, warmth, internet access to connect with loved ones, warm clothing, transport to terminals, recreational activities, and much more.

A heartfelt thank you to NCSM Donnacona and NAC-Montreal for putting together an amazing charity event with an unforgettable orchestral concert in support of Mariners' House. Your talent, your energy, and your incredible dedication made the evening truly special. Our gratitude extends to captain Ravinder Singh of the Federal Yamaska ship, joined by his chief engineer Rajesh Nambiar, chief officer Harleen Singh Dhami and deck cadet Saiyam Rastogi whose presence added meaning to the event. The captain also shared a few words with the 100+ guests, and reminded us of the vital role played by organizations like Mariners' House with a mission to provide for the well-being of seafarers. We thank all the generous guests who came to support; it means the world to us and helps fuel the impact we’re able to make.

And a special thank you to Anthony Colucci, president of NAC-Montreal and Patron of Mariners’ House, for organizing this memorable event.

"I come from a tiny island in the Philippines," says Mark Villaceran, Chef Cook on the Easterly Lime Galaxy tanker. "Before working on commercial ships, I was a fisherman, so seafood and fish is what I like cooking the most."

Mark and a few crew mates came to rest at the Mariners' House of Montreal. They arrived at the Port of Montreal through a long journey from Egypt. Their next stop is Baltimore, US.

"As a chef cook, you’re responsible to fuel the crew" he says, "you have to provide a balanced diet at all times, breakfast, lunch and supper." Mark has been a seafarer for 12 years, he graduated from the culinary school at a Maritime Academy in the Philippines.

"On the ship, I receive rations once a month so I have to plan accordingly. It’s challenging, and sometimes you have to be very creative. Once you’re at sea, you don't have access to anything else."

We’re wishing Mark and the crew from the Easterly Lime Galaxy safe travels and hoping to see them soon.

A heartfelt thank you to the Azamara Quest cruise ship for donating 7400 bottles of travel sized shampoo, conditioner and body lotion! It was wonderful to meet Valeriia Dobrovolska, HR Specialist on the day of delivery.

Thank you also to Pasquale Rizzi, Guest Relations Manager for the cruise terminals for facilitating and coordinating the donation.

These toiletries will be shared with seafarers through the upcoming Christmas parcel campaign.

We were also happy to share the bounty with Logifem and On Rock Community Services.
