Regeneration Canada is the non-profit organization that hosted the Living Soils Symposium Montreal on October 13-15, 2017 at Concordia University. Our mission is to

promote land management practices that regenerate soil health, in order to mitigate climate change and support the transition towards a healthy agriculture worldwide. This mission is achieved through:
- Educating & Spreading Knowledge on Soil Health
- Building a Strong and Resilient Network of Experts
- Stimulating & Supporting Regenerative Land Use

Régénération Canada est l'organisme à but non-lucratif qui a organisé le Symposium Sols Vivants Montréal du 13 au 15 octobre 2017, à l'Université Concordia. Notre mission est de promouvoir les pratiques de gestion des terres régénératrices de la santé des sols, afin d'atténuer les changements climatiques et de supporter la transition vers une agriculture saine. Des producteur·trices au Québec explorent les fourrages ligneux pour diversifier leurs sources de fourrage et renforcer la résilience des systèmes de pâturage 🌳🐄

De nouvelles recherches menées au Québec explorent le potentiel des fourrages ligneux pour renforcer les systèmes de pâturage, notamment grâce à leur capacité à :
• maintenir leur valeur nutritive durant l’été
• continuer à produire en période de sécheresse
• accroître la résilience à des pâturages

Certaines espèces ligneuses pourraient ainsi représenter une source de fourrage complémentaire lorsque les pâturages perdent en productivité durant l’été.

Des projets menés avec des producteur·trices au Québec explorent actuellement :
🌳 le potentiel fourrager et la valeur nutritive des fourrages ligneux
🐄 l’appétence de différentes essences chez les animaux
🪱 les impacts sur les sols et les pâturages

Une grande partie des connaissances sur le sylvopastoralisme provient de recherches menées ailleurs dans le monde. Ces projets contribuent à développer des connaissances adaptées aux réalités régionales pour soutenir l’adoption du sylvopastoralisme dans les systèmes de pâturage canadiens.

Farmers and ranchers are exploring tree forage to diversify feed sources and strengthen the resilience of their grazing systems 🌳🐄

New research in Quebec is exploring the potential of tree fodder to strengthen grazing systems, particularly due to its ability to:
• maintain its nutritional value through the summer
• continue to produce during periods of drought
• increase the resilience of pastures

Some tree species could therefore offer an additional source of forage when pasture productivity slows down during the summer months.

Projects currently underway with producers in Quebec are exploring:
🌳 The forage potential and nutritional value of tree forage
🐄 Which tree species livestock prefer to browse
🪱 Impacts on soil health and pasture systems

Much of what we know about silvopasture comes from research conducted in other countries. These projects are helping build regional knowledge needed to support silvopasture adoption in Canadian grazing systems.

À quoi ressemble l’agroforesterie sur une ferme laitière? 🌳🐄

En cette Journée mondiale du lait, nous mettons en lumière la Ferme Bertco inc., une ferme laitière de 5e génération située à Baie-du-Febvre qui contribue à faire avancer l’agroforesterie au Québec.

Leur démarche en agroforesterie a d’abord commencé avec l'objectif d'améliorer la survie hivernale des luzernières et des céréales d’automne grâce à des haies brise-vent et des rangées d’arbres.

Cette année, la Ferme Bertco a remporté le Prix Agroenvironnement à la Soirée des Gardiens du Terroir pour ses nombreuses pratiques agroenvironnementales.

Pratiques agroforestières en place :
🌳 haies brise-vent
🌳 rangées d’arbres dans les champs
🌳 bandes riveraines élargies

Aujourd’hui, la Ferme Bertco est un important site de recherche et d’apprentissage en agroforesterie au Québec.

Devenue l’une des premières fermes vitrines en agroforesterie de la province en 2012, elle contribue à adapter les connaissances au contexte québécois grâce à plusieurs projets de recherche appliquée.

Observations sur la ferme :
✔️ augmentation des populations d’oiseaux
✔️ infiltration de l’eau 3 à 4 fois plus élevée dans les parcelles avec arbres
✔️ plus grande résilience des cultures

La suite de leur démarche : vers le sylvopastoralisme.

🌳🐄 Le sylvopastoralisme consiste à intégrer arbres, pâturages et animaux d’élevage dans un même système.

🌱 Cette année, la ferme implante 40 acres de pâturage.
La plantation d’arbres débutera l’an prochain dans le cadre du développement progressif d’un système sylvopastoral de 60 acres où les vaches seront éventuellement intégrées.

What does agroforestry look like on a dairy farm? 🌳🐄

This World Milk Day, we’re spotlighting Ferme Bertco inc., a 5th-generation dairy farm helping to advance agroforestry systems in Quebec.

Their agroforestry journey began with a practical goal: improving the winter survival of alfalfa and fall cereals through Quebec winters using windbreaks and tree rows.

Agroforestry practices in place:
🌳 Windbreaks
🌳 Tree rows in fields
🌳 Riparian buffers

Today, Ferme Bertco has become an important site for agroforestry research and learning in Quebec.

Since becoming one of the province’s first agroforestry demonstration farms in 2012, the farm has contributed to adapting knowledge to Quebec contexts through several research projects.

Observations on the land:
✔️ Increased bird populations
✔️ Water infiltration is 3–4x higher in fields with trees
✔️ Greater crop resilience

Looking ahead, the farm is now exploring the next phase of its journey: silvopasture.

🌳🐄 Silvopasture intentionally combines trees, pasture, and livestock within the same system.

🌱 This year, the farm is establishing 40 acres of pasture. Tree planting will begin next year with the long-term goal of integrating cows into these tree-based grazing systems across 60 acres.

Organizations from across Canada have sent a joint letter to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada expressing urgent concern regarding the planned closure of the Organic and Regenerative Research Program at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre.

The letter follows the recent report of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, "Science in Canadian Agriculture and the Closure of Research Centres", which recommended that the Government of Canada “reconsider its decision to cancel the organic and regenerative program at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre.” The signors are calling on AAFC to immediately pause any actions that could compromise long-term organically managed trial land and authorize planned 2026 field operations to proceed.

The Organic and Regenerative Research Program is the only dedicated organic research program at AAFC and, in contrast to facility closures, is slated for closure at a research facility that remains fully operational.

Ils avaient de plus en plus de difficulté à trouver des aliments produits selon les standards avec lesquels ils avaient grandi… alors ils ont décidé de les produire eux-mêmes. 🌾

C’est ce qui a mené Donovan et Lisa Kitt à bâtir The Homestead, une ferme de 2 500 acres située à Goodfare, en Alberta, où élevage au pâturage, légumes biologiques, micropousses et santé des sols font partie d’un même système interconnecté.

Ayant eux-mêmes grandi sur des fermes biologiques, ils accordent une grande importance à produire des aliments nourrissants tout en soutenant la santé des sols, la biodiversité et la résilience à long terme. 🌱

Sur leur ferme, cela prend la forme de pâturage en rotation, d’animaux élevés sur des pâturages diversifiés, de systèmes d’élevage intégrés et de production maraîchère biologique.

Ce qu’ils offrent :

They were struggling to find food produced to the standards they grew up with... so they decided to grow it themselves. 🌾

That journey led Donovan and Lisa Kitt to build The Homestead, a 2,500-acre farm in Goodfare, Alberta, where organic vegetables, microgreens, grass-fed cattle, pasture-raised pigs and chickens, eggs, and grazing systems are all part of one connected farm system.

Raised on organic farms themselves, they care deeply about producing nutrient-dense food in ways that support soil health, biodiversity, and long-term ecosystem resilience. 🌱

On their farm, this looks like rotational grazing, animals raised on diverse pastures, integrated livestock systems, and certified organic vegetable production.

La gestion régénératrice des terres ne se limite pas au sol. Elle repose aussi sur les relations et la communauté. 🌱

Nous sommes heureux d’accueillir Digit Guedo à Régénération Canada à titre de chargée de programme du Programme d’agriculture régénératrice à leadership autochtone.

Digit travaille aux côtés des communautés autochtones pour soutenir une gestion régénératrice des terres, guidée par leurs priorités, leurs savoirs et leur leadership.

Ayant grandi sur une ferme mixte dans le sud-ouest de la Saskatchewan, elle apprit à apprécier le territoire dans toute sa richesse, au-delà de sa seule capacité de production – des tourbières aux sols alcalins, riches en biodiversité.

Écologue et agronome de formation, Digit possède une expérience en écologie des prairies, en gestion des pâturages, en conservation des habitats et en systèmes agroenvironnementaux. Son travail est ancré dans les relations de confiance, l’espace éthique et le dialogue entre différents savoirs.

Elle poursuit également son engagement auprès du troupeau de bisons de Sturgeon River Plains, contribuant à renforcer à la fois leur santé et à soutenir les relations entre les bisons, les humains, le feu et le territoire.

Originaire du territoire du Traité no 4 et maintenant établie sur le territoire du Traité no 6 et dans la patrie de la Nation métisse, elle est fière de faire partie du Treaty Land Sharing Network.

Regenerative land stewardship is about more than soil. It’s also about relationships and community. 🌱

We’re pleased to welcome Digit Guedo to Regeneration Canada as Program Manager of our Indigenous-led Regenerative Agriculture Program.

Digit works alongside Indigenous producers and communities to support regenerative land stewardship, guided by their priorities, knowledge, and leadership.

Growing up on a mixed farm in southwest Saskatchewan, Digit developed an early appreciation for the land in all its forms, not just for what it produces, but for the life it holds, from bogs to alkali landscapes rich with biodiversity.

An ecologist and Professional Agrologist, Digit brings experience in grassland ecology, range management, habitat conservation, and agri-environmental systems. Her approach is grounded in ethical space, two-eyed seeing, and genuine relationship-building.

She also remains connected to the Sturgeon River Plains Bison, supporting efforts to strengthen the health of the buffalo and the relationships between buffalo, people, fire, and land.

Raised in Treaty 4 and now living in Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis, Digit brings a grounded, thoughtful approach to her work and is proud to be part of the Treaty Land Sharing Network.
