🚨 Capacity development series towards the 2026 UN Water Conference: Session 6 on October 15th

Water doesn’t stop at borders, but cooperation too often does. Only 43 of the 153 countries sharing rivers, lakes and aquifers have operational arrangements covering at least 90% of their shared waters. With climate change, disasters and growing demand putting more pressure on water resources, effective cooperation matters more than ever.

Yet young people, women and Indigenous Peoples remain underrepresented in the spaces where shared water is governed. Join us to explore how that can change!

This 6th session, “Strengthening Scientific Water Cooperation and Diplomacy through Youth Involvement”, will bring together international experts, policymakers, practitioners and young water leaders to discuss:
🔹 How water cooperation and diplomacy can support peace, sustainable development and climate resilience
🔹 Progress under SDG indicator 6.5.2, and lessons from basin-level experiences
🔹 Youth recommendations towards the UN Water Conference and Interactive Dialogue 4: Water for Cooperation

Your input will feed into the Youth Position Statement of the Global Youth Movement for Water, so that young people’s perspectives shape global water action before, during and beyond the Conference.

📅 October 15th, 1:00 pm CET

On September 21, during the High-level Week of the UN General Assembly, Franck Tetouom N., member of the World Youth Parliament for Water spoke at the High-level Special Event Water for Planet: From the 2026 UN Water Conference to 2028.

His message was clear: meaningful youth engagement must go beyond simply having young people present in consultation spaces.
To tackle this, youth for water has a concrete recommendation: by 2030, people under 30 should make up 30% of those implementing water solutions ( #303030), with the funding, resources, and responsibilities needed to contribute meaningfully.

Francks intervention also highlights the collective mobilization led by the Global Youth Movement for Water (GYMW), in collaboration with the Major Group for Children and Youth, to strengthen meaningful youth engagement in the water sector.

Thank you, Franck, and congratulations on your commitment on the road to Abu Dhabi!

🤩 The Bali Youth Parliament for Water at the 11th GEF International Waters Conference (IWC11)

The International Secretariat for Water is delighted that Duhitta Hayyuardhini, from the Bali Youth Parliament for Water, has been invited to take part in the 11th Biennial Conference on International Waters organised by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which will be held from 19 to 22 October 2026 in Kuta, Bali, with the support of the Indonesian government.

Entitled ‘Shared Waters, Transformative Solutions: Enabling Systems Change’, this conference brings together project implementers, governments, development banks, civil society organisations and United Nations agencies, including UN Environment Programme , United Nations Development Programme - UNDP and UNESCO-IOC. It will help pave the way for the next GEF funding cycle (GEF-9), which places particular emphasis on the involvement of young people and women.

The Bali Youth Parliament for Water is a chapter of the World Youth Parliament for Water, established on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali in 2024. Two years on, seeing one of its members invited to this kind of event, alongside the institutions that shape water governance, is a tangible sign of progress.

We are delighted to see this momentum continue and young people actively involved in these forums. Their voices deserve a place at the table, as full partners.

Well done to Duhitta and the whole team at the Bali Youth Parliament for Water.

By, for and with young people. ✨

📢 New article : 17th European Youth Parliament for Water - Putting youth at the heart of watersheds

From September 20 to 26 in Strasbourg, 45 young people gathered for the 17th edition of the European Youth Parliament for Water, with the theme: “Uniting beyond borders, sectors, and generations for inclusive river basin governance” 💧

🎯With an introduction to the topic focusing on the European Union and the diversity of stakeholders, field visits, mentoring, experience-sharing sessions, and advocacy activities, the young people had the opportunity to elect a new executive board and influence water governance at the watershed level.

🤝What’s next? The challenge over the next two years will be to translate this momentum into concrete actions, both in the Rhine and in the other basins represented.

🚀Because watersheds are our shared future, their governance must be shaped in collaboration with those who will live with the consequences.
