June 13, 1979. On this day, 47 years ago, a group of Thomas More students visited Dante’s tomb in Ravenna, Italy. Dante and his writings have featured repeatedly in the theology, literature, and philosophy courses at Thomas More over the years, including courses like “To Hell and Back with Dante,” “Love in the Italian Renaissance,” “A Pilgrim’s Journey,” and “Reading Dante’s Divine Comedy: Love as Mover.”
This was part of a longer trip planned by the Thomas More Associates. Over the course of three weeks, they toured Italy, spending time in Rome, Pompeii, Pisa, Ravenna, Venice, Florence, and Verona.

A toast to 50 years of the Thomas More Institute's Seniors Outreach Program!

Each year, the Thomas More Institute develops and delivers an original 20-week discussion course designed specifically for seniors. Led by volunteers trained in the Thomas More Institute's approach to discussion, the course is offered on-site at various residences and senior’s centres in the Greater Montreal area. The goal of the program is to foster socialization and intellectual reflection by creating a welcoming environment in which participating seniors can engage with selected readings and with one another.

Here's to many more years of the Seniors Outreach Program!

Thank you to interviewers Irene Menear and Daniel Schouela, as well as interviewees Valerie Amyot, Claire English and Joseph Vietri for delivering the grand finale to the 2026 Spring Interview Series!

This event featured course leaders from the Thomas More Institute as they shared their experience of our unique classroom model, and opened the floor to a discussion with the audience about points from the book "Open Socrates: The Case for a Philosophical Life" by Agnes Callard.

A huge thank you to Jessica Riddell and Eva Pomeroy for coming in for this great event, and Rina Kampeas for a thought-provoking interview. May 4, 1948. On this day, 78 years ago, the Thomas More Institute signed documents affiliating them with the University of Montreal. What had started out as a group of close friends taking agency over their own education was now morphing into something bigger as they partnered with a degree-granting institution. In 1974, the University of Montreal abandoned its satellite colleges, including the Thomas More Institute, which is when the institute became affiliated with Bishop’s University. Students can still earn a BA at Thomas More through Bishop’s University today. Since 1948, many students have gone on to earn a degree at the Thomas More Institute.

April 29, 1982. Taking remote courses at the Thomas More Institute is nothing new! On this day, 44 years ago, the Westmount Examiner published an article titled “Phone hook gives shut-ins a chance to learn together.” It covered the telephone courses which the Institute offered in the 1980s to reach people who were physically impaired, suffering from chronic illnesses, or otherwise isolated. The Institute had a contract with the telephone company for a conference network where they would hold hour-long discussions once a week, based on readings which volunteers would deliver to the participants.
