From our offices in Montreal and Toronto Canadian Friends of the Tel Aviv University (CFTAU) organize events and activities from coast to coast with and for alumni, past attendees and friends of Tel Aviv University (TAU), and provide direct funding support for the educational an

d research goals of TAU. Today, Israel’s largest, most innovative, entrepreneurial and comprehensive institution of higher learning, TAU is facilitated by enhanced public awareness of the University’s achievements and programming through the development of a strong local network of support. As part of a global network of friends associations, CFTAU facilitates academic and research partnerships between Canada and Israel as well as scholarships, research support, student and faculty exchanges and recruitment of Canadian students to participate in the TAU International Program.

Researchers at Tel Aviv University have presented new findings indicating that the experimental drug Davunetide may significantly slow the progression of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in women, who exhibited a markedly different response to treatment than men. These results reinforce the need for sex-specific medicine in neurodegenerative diseases.

The new publication, led by Prof. Illana Gozes of the Sagol School of Neuroscience and the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at TAU, used updated FDA-recommended outcome measures to reanalyze data from a 52-week international clinical trial involving more than 300 patients with PSP, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by the abnormal accumulation of tau protein in the brain. There is currently no effective drug treatment for the disease.

World Breast Cancer Research Day, August 18, is a global recognition of the life changing research (past, present, and future) to end breast cancer.

Today, we highlight a large-scale international study which has uncovered a mechanism that allows breast cancer to send metastases to the brain — a highly lethal occurrence for which there is currently no effective treatment. The findings could enable the development of new drugs and personalized monitoring for early detection and treatment of brain metastases.

Twelve research master’s graduates from Tel Aviv University are among the founders of U.S.-based Deep Tech unicorn companies — an achievement that places TAU 3rd worldwide among universities outside the U.S., following Cambridge and Oxford.

A unicorn is a privately held startup company valued at more than $1 billion. The term was coined to reflect just how rare such companies were considered to be — much like the mythical creature.

The data, published by Prof. Ilya Strebulaev of Stanford University, places TAU 1st in Israel and 3rd worldwide among universities outside the U.S. for the number of research master’s graduates — excluding MBA graduates — who are among the founders of Deep Tech unicorn companies.

When Mooshi was born, she entered the world with a challenge that would affect much of her childhood: she had only three fingers on each hand.

Mooshi loves making art and using her imagination. But the tools to do that, though simple for most children to use, can be a frustrating obstacle for her. Without a thumb to help grip and control scissors, for example, an activity that came naturally to other children became a complex engineering problem waiting to be solved.

The question posed to a group of Tel Aviv University biomedical engineering students was simple: How can they help Mooshi do what she loves?

This encapsulates the philosophy behind TAU’s “Engineering Design” course, an innovative program in the Iby and Aladar Fleischman Faculty of Engineering. Now in its 11th semester in the School of Biomedical Engineering, in collaboration with TAU Impact (Mitchabrim Plus), and partners in the community, the course challenges students to exercise what they learn in the classroom by developing solutions for people who need them most.

Steering Light Beams in Under One Trillionth of a Second
A newly developed ultra-thin layer enables light beams to be steered and shaped almost instantaneously, at a record speed of 74 femtoseconds.

The advance could ultimately contribute to optical computing, communications, high-speed imaging, sensing, and quantum technologies.

The ability to control light underpins technologies ranging from cameras and sensors to communication systems and advanced computing. Yet while light itself travels at extraordinary speed, the components used to direct and shape it generally operate much more slowly. A new study published in Nature Nanotechnology presents a way to overcome this limitation: an ultra-thin optical surface that can redirect and reshape a beam of light in just 74 femtoseconds, less than one tenth of a trillionth of a second.

A simple, low-cost blood test on a chip diagnoses lung cancer without DNA sequencing
The new technology, developed by Tel Aviv University researchers, identifies the tumour's biological fingerprint with more than 90% accuracy and could complement CT scans in monitoring patients' response to treatment.

The method identifies a chemical fingerprint of cancer cells in the blood, by analyzing cell-free DNA originating from those cells. In the study, the test distinguished between lung cancer patients and healthy individuals with a sensitivity of 93.1% and a specificity of 90.3% for patients with stage 2-4 disease.

The world’s oceans may appear calm from space, but beneath the surface, an intricate web of fast-moving currents drives Earth’s climate. Now, a new TAU study has unveiled a breakthrough that allows scientists to observe these hidden motions with unprecedented clarity.

The researchers developed GOFLOW, an artificial intelligence-powered system that can reconstruct high-resolution ocean current patterns directly from satellite images. The technology provides scientists with an entirely new way to study the small-scale ocean dynamics that influence weather, climate change, and the exchange of heat and gases between the ocean and atmosphere.

Why does the oldest surviving work of Western literature continue to inspire new adaptations? As Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arrives in theatres, a Tel Aviv University classicist explains how the epic has been reinventing itself for nearly 3,000 years.

Nearly three thousand years after it was composed, The Odyssey continues to find new audiences.

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film is only the latest chapter in a long history of reinterpretation that began long before the epic was ever written down. For generations, the story was passed from one storyteller to another, changing with each performance and adapting to each new audience.

To understand why artists continue to return to The Odyssey, we first need to understand how it came into being: as a work that was never meant to exist in just one definitive version.
