Indigenous Health Centre of Tiohtià:ke Our mission is to improve the health outcomes, quality of life and social determinants of health of Aboriginal people in Montreal

The Montreal Urban Aboriginal Health Centre was officially incorporated on February 2, 2016. This initiative stemmed from a project undertaken by the Health Working Committee of the Montreal Urban Aboriginal Community Strategy Network (NETWORK). In 2011-2012, the Health Working Committee successfully completed a two-phase project, funded by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, which included developing and implementing a needs assessment on Aboriginal health in Montreal, and an extensive review of available health and social service organizations in Montreal to create an online database of resources available to the urban Aboriginal community. What was discovered was a need for culturally safe and appropriate health services for urban Aboriginal people that include child, youth and family services, primary care services, chronic disease management, infectious disease services, mental health and addictions services, homelessness and housing services, and social services. The Montreal Urban Aboriginal Health Needs Assessment represented a timely and important opportunity for Aboriginal organizations and their partners to consider how best to resolve some of the gaps and inequities in health service delivery in Montreal. In the short-term, this initiative intended to provide evidence-based recommendations to fill the gaps in the delivery of culturally sensitive and holistic health services to the Montreal urban Aboriginal population. In the long-term, this needs assessment supports the creation of a fully functional holistic Aboriginal health centre in Montreal. Since our incorporation, we have elected our inaugural Board of Directors and have been working tirelessly to make this Health Centre a reality in Montreal.

In recognition of tomorrow's World Mental Health Day, the IHCT would like to send a gentle reminder to our community that we are all in this together. Life can be heavy sometimes, and you do not have to carry it alone. If you are looking for ceremonies, traditional healing, an Elder, a psychologist, or just someone to talk to, please reach out to us, and remember that you are not alone. You matter and you belong here. We can all make our community a safe space where we listen without judgment, check in on one another, and treat ourselves with a little extra kindness.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming to our centre Désirée McGraw the MNA for NDG!
It was a lovely introduction to our mutual work and explore possibilities for future collaboration.
We look forward to staying connected and working together!

🧡 Yesterday was a beautiful success!

A huge thank you to our amazing workers’ team for all their hard work organizing our September 30th community event.

We prepared and handed out almost 200 hot dogs, thanks to Mitshuap for kindly letting us use their kitchen to cook them. We also shared fruits, desserts, drinks, chips, and more. Moreover, our essentials table was stocked with socks, underwear, toothbrushes, toothpaste, emergency blankets, ponchos, Kleenex, condoms, hygiene kits, and gloves.

A special thank you to Qavvivik for generously providing dried caribou and dried salmon for the community.

A special thank you as well for the SPVM for supporting us by helping giving food out.
It was also wonderful to have our health workers stop by and visit.

Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this important day. Together, we made it a meaningful day!
