On June 7, 2026, the Seafarers’ International Union of Canada will mark its 65th Anniversary, celebrating a historic milestone for the country’s largest union representing unlicensed seafarers in Canada.
While the SIU Canada’s history officially dates back 65 years, the Union’s roots in Canada stretch even further. The organization was active throughout Canada in the 1940s as the Canadian District of the Seafarers’ International Union of North America, representing Canadian seafarers during a transformative period for the country’s marine industry following the Second World War.
However, it was on June 7, 1961, that the SIU Canada formally became a distinct Canadian organization, separate from its American counterpart, with the adoption of its own Charter. That moment marked the beginning of a new era for Canadian seafarers, establishing an autonomous Canadian union dedicated specifically to protecting their interests, both at home and abroad on Canadian-flagged vessels.
Over the course of the past 65 years, the SIU Canada has experienced tremendous growth and change. The Union has faced economic downturns, industry restructuring, technological advancements, changing labour laws, numerous crises, and ongoing threats to Canada’s domestic shipping industry. Through every challenge, generations of SIU members have continued to adapt and evolve alongside the industry they keep moving.
Despite those changes, one thing has remained constant: the Union’s unwavering commitment to defending the rights, livelihoods, and dignity of Canadian seafarers. From collective bargaining and workplace protections to defending Canadian cabotage laws and advocating for fair treatment for all workers, the SIU Canada has remained a powerful voice for seafarers across the country.
Today, the SIU Canada continues to represent seafarers working aboard vessels operating throughout the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway, East Coast, West Coast, and Canada’s Arctic. As the Union marks this important anniversary, it also recognizes the generations of members, officers, and staff whose dedication helped build the organization into what it is today.
For 65 years under its own Charter, and for even longer within Canada’s marine sector, the SIU Canada has remained committed to the principle of a strong Canadian shipping industry whose success comes entirely from the work of highly trained and dedicated Canadian seafarers.
As the Union looks toward the future, the SIU Canada remains focused on continuing that legacy for generations of seafarers to come, from coast to coast to coast.

Le 7 juin 2026, le Syndicat international des marins canadiens (SIMC) soulignera son 65e anniversaire, une étape historique pour le plus important syndicat représentant les marins non brevetés au Canada.
Bien que l’histoire du SIMC remonte officiellement à 65 ans, les racines du syndicat au Canada sont plus profondes encore. Dès les années 1940, l’organisation était présente partout au pays sous le nom de Canadian District of the Seafarers’ International Union of North America, représentant les marins canadiens à une époque charnière pour l’industrie maritime du pays, au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
C’est toutefois le 7 juin 1961 que le SIMC est officiellement devenu une organisation canadienne distincte de son homologue américain, avec l’adoption de sa propre charte. Ce moment a marqué le début d’une nouvelle ère pour les marins canadiens : la naissance d’un syndicat canadien autonome, voué à la défense de leurs intérêts, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger, à bord des navires battant pavillon canadien.
Au cours des 65 dernières années, le SIMC a connu une croissance et des transformations considérables. Le syndicat a dû composer avec des ralentissements économiques, des restructurations du secteur, les progrès technologiques, l’évolution des lois du travail, de nombreuses crises et des menaces persistantes pour l’industrie maritime canadienne. À chaque épreuve, des générations de membres du SIMC ont su s’adapter et évoluer au rythme de l’industrie qu’ils maintiennent en mouvement.
Malgré tous ces bouleversements, une chose n’a jamais changé : l’engagement indéfectible du syndicat à défendre les droits, le gagne-pain et la dignité des marins canadiens. Qu’il s’agisse de négociation collective, de protections en milieu de travail, de la défense des lois canadiennes sur le cabotage ou de la promotion d’un traitement équitable pour l’ensemble des travailleurs, le SIMC demeure une voix forte pour les marins partout au pays.
Aujourd’hui, le SIMC continue de représenter les marins à bord des navires exploités dans les Grands Lacs, la Voie maritime du Saint-Laurent, sur la côte Est, la côte Ouest et dans l’Arctique canadien. En soulignant cet anniversaire marquant, le syndicat rend aussi hommage aux générations de membres, d’officiers et d’employés dont le dévouement a permis de faire de l’organisation ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui.
Depuis 65 ans sous sa propre charte, et depuis plus longtemps encore au sein du secteur maritime canadien, le SIMC est resté fidèle à un principe : une industrie maritime canadienne forte, dont la réussite repose entièrement sur le travail de marins canadiens hautement qualifiés et dévoués.
Tourné vers l’avenir, le SIMC demeure déterminé à perpétuer cet héritage pour les générations de marins à venir, d’un océan à l’autre, jusqu’à l’Arctique.
