An diesem 4.

☀️ 250 Years Later — A Montréal Story 🇨🇦🇩🇪

This July 4th marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence — but that same summer of 1776 tells a very different story here in Montréal.

On July 2nd, our DGM President, Petra Hillebrand, and Board member, Laura Schwenke, visited the Château Ramezay for the opening of a wonderful exhibit marking Montréal's role in the American Revolution — the very building where the Continental Army made its headquarters during its occupation of the city from November 1775 to June 1776.

Many forget how close things came here: Montréal fell to American forces on November 13, 1775, and was occupied by the Continental Army for the next seven months. A few weeks later, on December 31, 1775, an American assault on Quebec City failed disastrously — General Montgomery was killed — and the surviving troops settled into a siege of the city that dragged on through the winter. It wasn't until the spring of 1776, when German soldiers arrived — sent by the Duke of Brunswick and other German principalities to help Britain defend Canada — that the tide turned: they helped lift the siege of Quebec City in May, and by mid-June, helped end the occupation of Montréal as well — just weeks after the Thirteen Colonies to the south had declared their independence.

About 2,400 of these soldiers stayed in Canada after the war, some 1,300 of them in Québec — and some of today's Québec family names trace back to them: Payeur, Lettre, and Dubois, among others.

So this July 4th, as our neighbours mark 250 years of independence, we're remembering a quieter chapter of that same anniversary — one where German soldiers helped shape what Québec is today.

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer — see you at our upcoming events! ☀️

Today, June 29, the DGM commemorates the lives of 99 individuals – mostly German and Central European immigrants – who tragically died in 1864 in what remains Canada’s deadliest train accident. Around 500 immigrants had just arrived in Pointe-Levis after a 41-day sea voyage and continued their journey by train. In the early hours of June 29, the train failed to stop before an open swing bridge in Beloeil. 99 lives were lost. The sculpture Point pivot by artist Julie Robert stands as a powerful tribute to this tragedy. Additionally, a monument was erected at Mount Royal Cemetery on July 7, 1864, and was restored in 1985 to mark the 150th anniversary of the German Society, honoring the victims of the accident.
