I am still pinching myself - I must be dreaming! I'm feeling so grateful for everyone who has believed in me and supported my artistic journey throughout the years. This recognition could not be possible without all of the talented people who surround me, my community, and my family. Nia:wen kowa / thank you so much, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity .

Banff Centre is proud to announce Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo as the recipient of the Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award. A classically trained ballet dancer from Kahnawake, Kanienkeha:ka, Barbara brings a powerful fusion of powwow, Haudenosaunee, and contemporary dance to the stage. In 2021, she was the first Indigenous dancer to win the Prix de la Danse de Montréal for most notable dancer of the year and is Artistic Director and Choreographer of A’nó:wara Dance Theatre (A'nó:wara Dance Theatre), an Indigenous-run dance company that has presented award-winning works.

The award includes a $14,000 prize, a new commissioned work, and two full supported residencies—one for creative research this December and one for production in 2026. At Banff Centre, Barbara will create "I Dream in Wampum," an Indigenous futurism piece.

“I’m very excited to work with Banff Centre to create my new work… that will combine three of my passions: dance, science fiction, and my Kanien’keha:ka culture,” says Barbara. “It will allow us to imagine our powerful place in the stars, the place of our origins, which will also reflect on the strength of our people here.
