After the dignity revolution in Tunisia, Cairo's Liberation Square took up the flame, thus spreading the movement to the other peoples of the region. The call of dignity and freedom has not stopped spreading: from Yemen to Morocco, from Algeria to Bahrain, Libya, Jordan, Syria and Iraq and, of course, Palestine. Beyond differences in identities and cultures between and within each country, the upr
isings in the countries of the Arab world share the same aspirations. All the peoples of the region demand universal rights of freedom, dignity and justice. It seems primordial to support the winds of change stirred up by the peoples of the Arab world; particularly, by re-focusing public debate on the real issues behind these popular uprisings. We call for an end to the double-standard the "West" has applied to the uprisings in the Arab world and for a just and fair stance towards all the peoples of the region, who are unanimously calling for democratic values. We are against all foreign intervention, but a Canadian government which respects human rights and democratic principles can never be complaisant towards dictatorship.
