Back-to-School Tip: Reset Your Child’s Sleep Routine

The new school year is just around the corner! Now is a good time to help your child get back into healthy sleep habits.

- Ease into an earlier bedtime. If summer bedtimes have drifted later, gradually move bedtime earlier in the days leading up to the first day of school.

- Keep bedtime routines consistent. A predictable routine helps children wind down. Try a bath or shower, reading together, then lights out at around the same time each night.

- Put screens away before bed. Encourage your child to stop using phones, tablets, computers and other screens before bedtime. A quiet, calm environment can also make it easier to fall asleep.
- Keep a regular schedule. Consistent bedtimes and wake-up times, including on weekends, can help support healthy sleep habits.
- Why does it matter? Getting enough sleep supports children’s health, well-being and ability to learn and function at school.

Back-to-School Tip: Get Involved in Your Child’s School

A new school year is a great time to get connected with your child’s school community, especially if your child is starting at a new school.

Research shows that family engagement in education can have a positive impact on children’s learning, achievement and well-being. But being involved doesn’t mean you have to take on a huge commitment!

- Get to know your child’s school. Attend an information evening, introduce yourself to teachers and learn about what’s happening in your school community.

- Join your Home & School Association (H&S). It’s a great way to meet other parents, share ideas and have a voice in your school community.

- Help when you can and how you can. You don’t have to volunteer for everything! Maybe you can help at one event, share a skill, contribute an idea or lend a hand when your schedule allows. Every contribution makes a difference.

- Stay connected. Talk with your child about their school experience, celebrate their successes and let them know that their education matters to you.

Being involved isn’t about doing it all. It’s about being part of your child’s school community in a way that works for your family.

Look for information on your school's H&S association on their website or on Facebook/Instagram (many H&Ss have accounts).

Throwback Thursday.

This was sent to us last year via our beloved Maryln Bronwrigg, who got it from a friend's mother.

Great to see how a H&S supported Cookshire Elementary School back in the day. But I'm pretty sure today's students are very happy that H&S stopped covering cod liver oil doses!

Which of the services/events in the list do you find the most interesting?

What's the weirdest thing you ever found in a lost & found box?

It could be from this year, from last year, not even from a school lost & found box. Just the weirdest...

(And not a lost & found box, but someone donated a "Diseases of the Testicles" textbook to our elementary used book sale. We removed it from the tables, but that was definitely weird.)

Do your kids play video games?

United for Literacy / Littératie Ensemble recommends this storytelling-based game in honour of National Indigenous History Month.

If your kids or you have played it, let us know what you think!

A small thank you for a year of hard work...

This week, QFHSA mailed a small appreciation gift to the dedicated executives of our H&Ss across Quebec.

Throughout the year, H&S executives give their time, energy, ideas, and care to support students, families, and school communities. From organizing events and fundraising to advocating, planning, and showing up wherever help is needed, their work often happens quietly behind the scenes, but its impact is deeply felt.

This mailing is simply one small way of saying THANK YOU for all that you do.

H&S executives, keep an eye on your mailbox (old school - not email.) A little gesture of gratitude is on its way 💙
