Yocomo (Yoga Communauté Montréal/Yoga Community Montréal) is a grassroots initiative to recognize the breadth of practice, skill and integrity of yoga in Montréal. This city is full of curious seekers who are hopeful and inspired. The intention of this project and the annual Yoga Festival Montréal is to find the people who are steadily doing their work and shine a light on them—the teachers and p
ractitioners who are committed and dedicated. Motivated by a desire to connect the undercurrent of yoga in Montréal, Yocomo is taking yoga out of the studio and into the hood. The goal of yoga communauté montréal is to unearth the gems of the everyday yoga community. Together, we can span ideology, tradition, culture and language, and break down the barriers between lineages. We can connect and share our personal experiences for the growth of the community. We will talk, laugh, sing, eat, celebrate, dance, enjoy life. We are here to connect the community of yoga practitioners in Montréal in a way that supports dialogue, creativity and growth. We are committed to empowering individuals, connecting the vast range of traditions and practices, and coming together to support our community’s growth and celebrate its vibrant diversity. We strive to make yoga, in all its forms, accessible and transparent, demystifying its role in western culture and sharing its potential for empowering and uplifting the community. By coming together for dialogue and celebration, the yoga community can plant the seeds of transformation on a larger scale—yoga can challenge consumerism, militarism, sexism, racism. we believe:
* in the accessibility of yoga for everyone regardless of language, socio-economic status, ability, body type, creed, lifestyle
* in the humanness of yoga
* in the endless pursuit of knowledge
* in conversation and dialogue, holding space for difference and disagreement
* that yoga is more than asana
* that yoga is an empowering and transformative practice
* that yoga must evolve according to what’s actually happening both on and off the mat and the cultural evolution of its time
