Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples—the original Peoples of these lands.
For many Canadians, Indigenous history is often overlooked. Yet Indigenous communities have lived on and cared for these lands for thousands of years. Despite the lasting impacts of colonization, residential schools, and the loss of language and culture, Indigenous Peoples continue to preserve their traditions, strengthen their communities, and share their teachings with future generations.
As Muslims, we are taught to stand for justice, honour human dignity, and learn from one another. Taking time to understand Indigenous Peoples and their experiences is part of building a more compassionate and just society for everyone.
