La Leche League International has publicly voiced opposition to collaboration between the United Nations and Nestlé, raising concerns about conflicts of interest related to the marketing of breastmilk substitutes.

For decades, families, advocates, healthcare providers, and organizations around the world have worked to protect breastfeeding and infant feeding support from commercial influence through the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.

At La Leche League Canada, we believe families deserve evidence-based information, compassionate support, and infant feeding education free from commercial pressure.

Your baby’s mouth was designed to grow, move, and develop. Feeding plays a role in that.

Breastfeeding supports oral development through the natural movements babies use while nursing, helping support healthy jaw, muscle, and palate development along the way.

And despite the fear-based headlines parents often see online, breastfeeding itself is not considered a cause of cavities.

Nighttime nursing is also biologically normal. During the night, saliva production decreases for everyone, children and adults included. Good oral hygiene, regular dental care, limiting sticky sugary foods, and supporting families with evidence-based information all matter when it comes to oral health.

What supports healthy teeth and mouths?
✨ Breastfeeding
✨ Early oral hygiene
✨ Limiting sugary and sticky foods
✨ Avoiding sugary drinks in bottles
✨ Regular dental care
✨ Responsive feeding and support without shame

Parents deserve nuanced, evidence-based information, not guilt.

Babies have their own feeding patterns!

Some feed at regular intervals. Others feed very irregularly. Some babies cluster feed. This means they nurse very often for a few hours and then sleep for several hours.

A good milk supply is established by following your baby’s feeding cues, not scheduling feedings. Cues may include licking lips, restlessness, rooting (turning head towards breast) or mouthing hands. Crying is a late hunger cue. Typically 8 to 12 feeds or more within 24 hour is expected.

A more recent myth that’s been circulating is the idea that you need to wean from direct breastfeeding once your baby gets teeth. This belief may stem from fears of biting or discomfort as teeth begin to erupt. Rest assured, breastfeeding can continue comfortably long after teeth appear. If you’re experiencing discomfort with latching or have concerns about being bitten, please reach out for support.

Fact: Babies may start teething as early as four months. The presence of teeth doesn’t prevent comfortable or effective nursing. Breast milk continues to offer essential nutrition and immune protection the first year of life and beyond. If you experience discomfort or need help, we’re here!

Nursing into toddlerhood can provide so many benefits, often with less demand or concerns about milk supply. As they begin eating and drinking on their own, nursing becomes more about connection, emotional regulation, and comfort—while still offering important health benefits for both of you!
