Cette conférence en images raconte les histoires entremêlées des entreprises Wings et de la famille Lee à Montréal, du début du 20ème siècle jusqu’à 1964. Wings a commencé ses opérations avec une entreprise d’importation, une épicerie et un magasin de médecine naturelle avant de pivoter vers la fabrication de nouilles, de biscuits de fortune et de sauces après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. À travers les décennies au Quartier chinois de Montréal, l’entreprise et la famille se sont donné comme mots d’ordre le travail acharné, la persévérance, la solidarité familiale et le dévouement envers leur communauté.

LA COLLECTION WINGS : ARCHIVER LA MÉMOIRE DU QUARTIER CHINOIS PAR LES OBJETS
Avec Jean-Philippe Riopel, fondateur d’Objets de Mémoire, groupe d’action muséologique
L’idée de la collection Wings est née lorsque Gilbert Lee, copropriétaire de Wings, a mandaté son ami Jean-Philippe Riopel, guide de Montréal et muséologue, de créer une collection constituée de plus de 5000 lots d’objets liés à l’histoire de la famille Lee, celle de Wings, et celle du Quartier chinois. Ce travail serait porté par la nouvelle OBNL Objets de Mémoire, groupe d’action muséologique, et ses collaborateur·ices. Après 4 ans de travail acharné, la collection Wings a récemment été cédée au par les frères Garnet et Gilbert Lee. Dans sa présentation, Jean-Philippe Riopel nous parle de son parcours et de l’incroyable histoire de la création et de la patrimonialisation de la collection Wings, tout en nous présentant quelques objets phares.

Dans cette présentation, Karen Cho nous partage ses réflexions sur le processus de transformation de près de 130 ans d’histoire en une exposition vivante, « Nouilles Wing – Le cœur du Quartier chinois », et sur le processus de documentation des dernières semaines de production de Nouilles Wing et de l’héritage qu’elle laisse aux générations futures, lesquelles feront partie d’un film documentaire à venir. En se concentrant sur la période qui débute en 1964 l’emménagement de Wings dans un des bâtiments les plus historiques et emblématiques du Quartier chinois, la présentation nous invite aussi à réfléchir à l’importance du passé pour éclairer le futur de l’îlot Wings.

WINGS AND THE LEE FAMILY: A CHINATOWN HISTORY

This illustrated lecture tells the intertwined stories of the Wing's businesses and the Lee family in Montreal from the turn of the 20th century until 1964. Wing's began as an importer, grocery, and herbal medicine store and pivoted after World War II to manufacturing noodles, fortune cookies, and sauces. Through the decades in Montreal Chinatown, the common themes of the business and the family have been hard work, perseverance through adversity, family solidarity, and commitment to the community.

THE WINGS COLLECTION: ARCHIVING CHINATOWN’S MEMORY THROUGH OBJECTS (in French)

The idea of the Wings Collection sprouted when Gilbert Lee, co-owner of Wings, mandated his friend Jean-Philippe Riopel, who’s also a Montréal guide and museologist, to create a collection made up of 5000 lots of objects closely tied to the history of the Lee family, of Wings, and of Montréal’s Chinatown. This work would be taken on by new non-profit
Objets de Mémoire, groupe d’action muséologique, and its collaborators. After 4 years of meticulous work, the Wings Collection has been handed to by the brothers Garnet and Gilbert Lee. In this talk, Jean-Philippe Riopel shares his journey and walks us through the incredible story of the Wings Collection’s creation and its preservation as a heritage collection, while also presenting some of its most interesting objects.

WING NOODLES: CURATING THE PAST - DOCUMENTING THE PRESENT - IMAGINING THE FUTURE
With Karen Cho, documentary filmmaker and exhibition curator
In this presentation, curator and filmmaker Karen Cho will reflect on the process of transforming nearly 130 years of history into the living exhibition “Wing Noodles – The Heart of Chinatown” as well as the process of capturing Wing Noodles’ final weeks of production and the future of Wing’s legacy in a forthcoming documentary film. Focusing on the era from 1964 onwards, where Wings occupied one of Chinatown’s most historic and iconic buildings, this presentation will also challenge us to reflect on how the past can inform the future for the Wing’s block of Chinatown.
