Capital Funding Opportunity:

The federal government's Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) is open to territorial and Indigenous applicants until August 12, 2026.

If you live in a territory or are an Indigenous applicant and looking for sources of funding to build a midwifery clinic, than this could be a funding opportunity for you!

Health infrastructure projects are eligible under the Direct Delivery Stream for Indigenous and Territorial applicants.

Recent actions by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) challenge the recognition of Indigenous midwifery and suspend the Position Statement on Partnership Between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Midwives. The National Council of Indigenous Midwives (NCIM) and the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) have issued a joint statement in response.

This is about more than terminology. It is about Indigenous self-determination, Indigenous governance, and the recognition of Indigenous systems of knowledge, care, and accountability.

Indigenous midwives are health care providers, teachers, knowledge holders, advocates, and community leaders. Their expertise is grounded in both clinical practice and generations of cultural knowledge, community responsibility, and lived experience.

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour the Indigenous midwives who have carried birth knowledge across generations.

Long before hospitals, professional colleges, and modern health systems, Indigenous midwives cared for women, babies, families, and communities. They were healers, teachers, mentors, leaders, and knowledge holders.

Colonial policies attempted to disrupt Indigenous birth practices through forced relocation, residential schools, evacuation for birth, and the exclusion of Indigenous knowledge from health systems.

Yet Indigenous midwifery did not disappear.

Indigenous midwives continued to practice, teach, adapt, advocate, and rebuild.

Today Indigenous midwives around the world continue the work of bringing birth back to communities and restoring Indigenous systems of care.

Indigenous midwifery is not a relic of the past. It is living, evolving, and essential to the future.

NCIM and CAM issue a joint statement responding to ICM's handling of Indigenous Midwifery

The National Council of Indigenous Midwives (NCIM) and the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) reject the International Confederation of Midwives’ (ICM) continued framing of Indigenous midwifery as one of terminology and professional standards, when the concerns raised by Indigenous midwives have consistently centred on Indigenous self-determination, Indigenous governance, and the recognition of multiple systems of knowledge, authority, and accountability.

CAM hosted a wonderful association exchange at the ICM conference in Lisbon, bringing together representatives from TAMA, AMAMI, SLNMA, EMWA, CAM, and the National Midwives Association of Uganda (NMAU).

It was a valuable evening of connection, learning, and sharing, with conversations focused on governance, member engagement, and advocacy strategies across midwifery associations.

L’ACSF a organisé un merveilleux échange entre associations lors du congrès de l’ICM à Lisbonne, réunissant des représentantes de TAMA, AMAMI, SLNMA, EMWA, CAM et de la National Midwives Association of Uganda (NMAU).

Cette soirée a été une belle occasion de tisser des liens, d’apprendre et de partager, avec des échanges axés sur la gouvernance, l’engagement des membres et les stratégies de plaidoyer au sein des associations de sages-femmes.

From across the world, Indigenous Midwives came to the ICM Congress to learn that not only had the ICM statement in support of Indigenous midwifery been rescinded, but that the term “Indigenous midwifery” had been made explicitly unwelcome at this Congress.

This systemic erasure of Indigenous midwives, babies, and birthing people is a continuation of the colonial project that has led to the genocide of Indigenous people around the globe.

From Turtle Island to Gaza, from Aoteroa to Sápmi, Indigenous midwifery is the foundation of midwifery practice anywhere and everywhere. It is the collective heritage of our craft.

In their relentless attempt to patent the term “midwife,” ICM standards have criminalized our traditional practitioners and disparaged our ancestral medicines, even as colonial midwives appropriated our ancestral practices and technologies.

No matter the language, ICM does not, has never, will never own the term “Midwife.” Midwifery belongs first and foremost to the communities we serve.

We call on our allies, here and around the world, to hold ICM accountable. To assert their responsibility to repair the colonial legacies imposed on Indigenous peoples. And to stand up in defense of a midwifery that is inclusive to all.

Because if you want a million more midwives, you must start with Indigenous communities. You start with us.
