Another sweet Hope Garden gathering last week, this time in partnership with Fusion UrbaNature. On a blistering hot day, we managed to get together and take shade in the micro-forest, and were lucky to hear from fabulous facilitator, Naomi, and her team, about the functions of micro-forests and the development of this space in NDG. We identified plants through the properties of their leaves, got our hands dirty planting sunflowers, and made sandwiches for a picnic while we thought about new ways to connect around composting, ocean projects and climate education.

Stay tuned for more events to follow. Hope Garden is a recent initiative by the Family Care Collective, and aims to foster pro-environmental action. Our mission is to ensure inclusive learning opportunities for families facing barriers. These family-friendly events feature guest speakers, community gardening, arts-based projects, experiential learning, and climate action. Through collaboration with local initiatives and guest hosts, we share accessible knowledge about gardens and green spaces in the city, inspiring engagement with the natural environment.

This time around, we are teaming up with F.U.N. Programming to host an exciting event at their Micro-Forest in NDG. Our facilitator, Naomi, will lead us on a guided forest tour to explore its environmental importance and community significance.

As summer settles in, we prepare for our August break. It has been such a rich time in our groups with circle sharing (peer support). It has always been a vision of mine to gather women in community to support each other through meaningful transitions, that are always steeped in both great joy and grief. It has been a year of forging and deepening connections, and I’m grateful for calling in the vision and watching it materialize, offering a soft landing for women and families in our community.

That being said, I know that many rely on the groups for mental health support and that the breaks can be a challenge. Please reach out to me if you need support during the holiday, and I am as always, so excited to welcome you back in September. Dates TBD.
