Today, I join Tamil communities in Vimy, across Canada, and around the world in marking Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day.

We remember the tens of thousands of innocent lives lost, the families forever changed, and those still missing.

I stand in solidarity with Tamil Canadians as they honour their loved ones. On this solemn day, we reaffirm our commitment to truth, justice, and ensuring these tragedies are never forgotten.

May 18 marks a day of immeasurable pain in Tamil history — a day where countless innocent Tamil lives were lost in Mullivaikkal, leaving behind silence, grief, and memories that can never be erased. Today, we remember the mothers who wept for their children, the families torn apart, and the lives that ended without justice. Mullivaikkal is not just a place; it is a symbol of resilience, suffering, and the enduring strength of the Tamil people.

As we light candles in remembrance, we honor every soul lost and stand united in preserving their stories for future generations. Though years may pass, the pain remains etched in our hearts. We remember not to spread hatred, but to ensure that truth is never forgotten and such tragedies are never repeated.

We mourn. We remember. We will never forget.

Today, on Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, we remember the tens of thousands of civilians who lost their lives during the Sri Lankan civil war, the families torn apart, the communities devastated, and those who remain missing to this day.
I stand with Tamil Canadians in Mount Royal and across the country as they honour loved ones and commemorate this solemn anniversary.

In 2022, Canada formally recognized the Tamil genocide and designated May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. In 2023, Canada imposed sanctions on senior Sri Lankan officials, including two former Presidents, in response to gross and systematic human rights violations committed during and after the conflict.

As a member of the Core Group on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council since 2018, Canada continues to play a leading role in advancing international accountability, justice, reconciliation, and human rights for Tamil communities.
