You know how to insert a line; now learn how to secure it like in real clinical practice.

This hands-on session with and focuses on the part students rarely get to practice: catheter and PIV securement, tissue adhesives, and implantable venous access devices (IVADs). You will move from focused theory to immediate practice, learning techniques used in real care settings to keep lines safe, stable, and complication-free.

Designed for U2, U3, BNI, and graduate students who want to go beyond the basics. Sign up with the QR code or the following link: https://forms.gle/vsAFTjjqfE2xULBP9

Want to build confidence in preventing insertion‑site contamination and protecting your patients’ skin integrity? Curious about improving your central line dressing skills?

McGill VASC, in collaboration with Covalon, is hosting a hands-on session where you’ll explore different dressing securement methods using CovaClear and ValGuard and learn how to maintain skin integrity in critical care and vulnerable populations.
You’ll also be among the first nurses in Quebec to try Covalon’s newest products before they roll out across the province.

Join us next Thursday, January 15th, at 3:00 pm in a secret ISoN room (the room details will be provided once your spot is confirmed). Don’t miss this unique opportunity!

🩸 Types of Blood Transfusion – Explained

Blood transfusions are given to replace specific blood components based on a patient’s condition. Modern medicine prefers component therapy to treat the exact deficiency and reduce risks.

🔴 Whole Blood – used in massive blood loss
🔴 Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBCs) – for anemia and low hemoglobin
🟡 Platelet Transfusion – for low platelet count and bleeding risk
🟡 Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) – corrects clotting factor deficiencies
🔴 Cryoprecipitate – treats low fibrinogen and hemophilia
⚪ Granulocyte Transfusion – rare; for severe infections
🔁 Exchange Transfusion – mainly in newborns with severe jaundice

💡 Right component, right patient, right time saves lives.

This infographic clearly compares Midline catheters, Central Venous Catheters (CVC), and PICC lines, helping healthcare professionals and students choose the right vascular access device based on treatment needs and duration.

🔵 Midline Catheter
A long peripheral IV catheter inserted in the upper arm. The tip does not reach central circulation, making it suitable for short- to mid-term therapy such as IV antibiotics, fluids, and pain medications. It carries a lower infection risk but is not used for TPN, vesicants, or high-osmolar solutions.

🔴 Central Venous Catheter (CVC)
Inserted directly into a central vein (internal jugular, subclavian, or femoral), with the tip in the superior vena cava or right atrium. Ideal for critical care, including vasopressors, TPN, chemotherapy, rapid fluid resuscitation, and hemodynamic monitoring. It provides reliable access but has the highest risk of infection and complications.

🟣 PICC Line (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter)
A central line placed through a peripheral vein, usually in the upper arm, with the tip positioned in the SVC. Best for long-term IV therapy, such as prolonged antibiotics, chemotherapy, TPN, and frequent blood sampling. It offers lower infection risk than traditional CVCs and is suitable for extended use.

📊 Key Takeaway:

Midline: Peripheral, short-term, non-central

CVC: Direct central access, critical care

PICC: Peripheral entry with central tip, long-term therapy

🧠 Memory Tip:
Midline = Middle length (not central)
PICC = Peripheral entry, Central tip
Central line = Direct central access
