Our rights are constantly being trampled by the CAQ!

Anti-union laws. Harmful policies for the most vulnerable workers. Inaction in the face of the housing crisis. Cuts to public service and social program budgets. Privatization. Our social safety net is broken by the CAQ’s political choices, and instead of trying to strengthen it, this boss-driven government is multiplying decisions that collectively impoverish us, infringe on our rights, and silence criticism.

Like governments of recent decades, the CAQ is cutting public service budgets and promoting the development of private markets. For the population, this means reduced access to the services they need. It also means unacceptable working conditions for those who provide those services. Yet, accessible and universal social services and programs are a key to ensuring everyone’s right to live in dignity.

Now more than ever, we must put pressure on the government to stop attacking our rights and further destroying our social safety net!

We are calling on women of all generations to stand up on March 8, International Women’s Rights Day, against the attacks that are undermining the rights of women in particular across all spheres of life. This year’s theme, Generations, stand up! is a nod to Québécoises deboutte! (women of Québec, stand up!), a newsletter published in the early 1970s by the Front de libération des femmes du Québec, an organization that played a instrumental role in the history of radical feminism in Québec. The implicit message is that, like the women of past generations, women today have endured too much for too long. It is time to rise up!

Throughout its hundred-year history, the CSN has spearheaded many battles, and women have been on the front lines since the beginning. Today, we are seeing the reversal of hard-won rights, including labour rights and the rights of women in public and private life. A worldwide right-wing ideological tide is challenging all the progressive movements that have advanced social rights, including union rights for the working class, feminism, the fight against discrimination and environmental protection. The right is claiming things have gone too far and is pushing law and order

On March 2, 1961, members of the administrative support staff of the Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal (Montreal Catholic School Commission) met in a general assembly to form their union. Held in the afternoon at Saint-Émile School, this assembly allowed for:

• The officialization of the union’s name as “L’Association professionnelle du personnel administratif de la Commission des Écoles Catholiques de Montréal”;
• The adoption of a first draft of the union’s by-laws and regulations;
• The admission of the first 260 members to have signed their union membership;
• Elections of the first members of the Executive Committee:
o Mr. Jean-Paul Auger, President;
o Mr. Emmanuel Madore, 1st Vice-President;
o Ms Françoise Dubois, 2nd Vice-President;
o Miss Alice Magna, Secretary;
o Mr. Gaétan Daoust, Treasurer;
o Mr. Antonio Michelin and Mr. Lucien Ménard, male directors
o Miss Gabrielle Grondin and Miss Denise Provençal, female directors;
• The adoption of a proposal for the APPA-CECM to submit a request to the Province of Quebec’s Labour Relations Commission to be recognized as the representative of the administrative staff at the CECM;
• The formation of a Constitution Committee;
• The adoption of another proposal to send the Secretary of the Province (Professional Unions Act) a request for incorporation; and finally,
• The adoption of a proposal for affiliation with the Centrale professionnelle des employés de corporations municipales et scolaires, the Conseil central des Syndicats nationaux de Montréal and the Confédération des syndicats nationaux.

65 years later, your union has come a long way and we have fought! Over the years, its members have always been able to brilliantly rise in activism and mobilization to be heard. This rich history is also yours! And now it’s up to you to participate in the writing of the next chapters of this story, for the ideals of the founding members must live on through you!

Happy 65th!
