"Reimagine” - the theme of this year - is an invitation to all of us to see and protect the ocean for what it really is: an essential component of Earth’s infrastructure of life.

The ocean connects continents and people, underpins the global economy, feeds billions, and nurtures culture, heritage and art. it regulates the climate and hosts a sizeable portion of the diversity of genes and species on the planet.

We at United Nations Biodiversity will continue to support national efforts for the ocean, including through the Sustainable Ocean Initiative (SOI) and the science-based process to describe ecologically or biologically significant marine areas ( ). On this World Oceans Day, we invite you to be part of a rising tide of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework ( ).

This year , invites us to listen to the planet’s signals and act on them.

Climate change is one of the major drivers of biodiversity loss. Nature, on the other hand, is one of humanity’s greatest allies in mitigating climate change and bolstering resilience against its impacts.

This means that global climate goals and the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework must be pursued in tandem.

This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact”, reminds us that action for biodiversity begins in the places where we live, work and care for nature.

As the world looks ahead to COP17 in Armenia under the theme “Taking Action for Nature”, is an opportunity to celebrate local action and build momentum for implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
