The following is written by CIMPN president, Kelley O’Rourke: During my visit to Ireland in May, CIMPN director Linda Fitzgibbon, Gregg Thomassin and I visited Aideen’s Grave on the grounds of Howth Castle in Dublin. Hidden beneath trees and surrounded by blooming rhododendrons, the ancient Neolithic tomb dates back nearly 6,000 years. Known through both archaeology and Irish folklore, Aideen’s Grave remains one of Ireland’s most atmospheric heritage sites. The visit was a beautiful reminder of how landscape, storytelling, mythology, and memory continue to shape Irish heritage today. Themes that also inspire much of CIMPN’s work in preserving Irish history and cultural landscapes in Quebec.

Le texte qui suit est signé par Kelley O’Rourke, présidente de RCPMI: Lors de ma visite en Irlande en mai, la directrice du CIMPN Linda Fitzgibbon, Gregg Thomassin et moi-même avons visité la tombe d’Aideen sur le domaine du château de Howth à Dublin. Cachée sous les arbres et entourée de rhododendrons en fleurs, cette ancienne tombe néolithique remonte à près de 6 000 ans. Connue à la fois par l’archéologie et le folklore irlandais, la tombe d’Aideen demeure l’un des sites patrimoniaux les plus évocateurs d’Irlande. Cette visite fut un magnifique rappel de la façon dont le paysage, les récits, la mythologie et la mémoire continuent de façonner le patrimoine irlandais aujourd’hui. Des thèmes qui inspirent également une grande partie du travail du CIMPN dans la préservation de l’histoire irlandaise et des paysages culturels au Québec.

The Plaque to the Irish in Old Quebec, pays tribute to the local Irish community and commemorates the first Saint-Patrick's Church in Quebec City. Inaugurated on St. Patrick’s Day in 1997, the plaque memorializes the arrival of thousands of Irish people who fled The Great Famine in the 1840’s. The plaque is just a couple of steps from the Celtic cross at Artillery Park, making the two companions. La Plaque aux Irlandais, située dans le Vieux-Québec, rend hommage à la communauté irlandaise locale et commémore la première église Saint-Patrick de la ville de Québec. Inaugurée le jour de la Saint-Patrick en 1997, la plaque commémore l’arrivée de milliers d’Irlandais fuyant la Grande Famine des années 1840. The following is written by CIMPN president, Kelley O’Rourke: As Memorial Day is observed in the United States, it is important to remember that the American Civil War also touched communities in what was then Lower Canada, years before Canadian Confederation in 1867. Richard Ryan, born in Saint-Colomban in 1838 to Irish immigrant parents from County Tipperary, died on May 28, 1862, during the Siege of Corinth in Mississippi, one of the major campaigns of the American Civil War. A notice published in the Montreal Gazette identified him as: “Killed in battle of Corinth…” Although his military regiment remains unknown, his family memorialized him in Saint-Colomban Cemetery with the inscription “Though not here in body is here in spirit.” His story is a reminder that the Civil War’s impact extended far beyond the United States and touched Irish communities here in Quebec as well.

Un lien oublié entre le Québec et la guerre de Sécession américaine subsiste dans le cimetière de Saint-Colomban. Richard Ryan, né à Saint-Colomban en 1838 de parents immigrants irlandais originaires du comté de Tipperary, est décédé le 28 mai 1862 durant le siège de Corinth, au Mississippi, l’une des grandes campagnes de la guerre de Sécession américaine. Un avis publié dans le Montreal Gazette indiquait : « Killed in battle of Corinth… » Bien que son régiment militaire demeure inconnu, sa famille a choisi de préserver sa mémoire dans le cimetière de Saint-Colomban avec l’inscription : « Though not here in body is here in spirit. » Son histoire rappelle que les répercussions de la guerre de Sécession ont dépassé les frontières des États-Unis et ont aussi touché les communautés irlandaises du Québec.

While attending the Global Irish Civic Forum last month in Ireland, our President Kelley O’Rourke and her husband Gregg met up with Linda Fitzgibbon, who also serves on the CIMPN board of directors! Discussions between the two focused on shared interests in genealogy, oral history, migration research, and strengthening international connections between organizations and researchers working to preserve Irish heritage and migration stories both in Ireland and Canada. More on the CIMPN’s experience at the forum soon! 🇮🇪🇨🇦

Lors du Forum civique irlandais mondial qui s'est tenu le mois dernier en Irlande, notre présidente Kelley O’Rourke et son mari Gregg ont rencontré Linda Fitzgibbon, également membre du conseil d'administration du CIMPN! The CIMPN is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of esteemed journalist, author, and historian Alan Hustak. Alan was a monumental figure in documenting and preserving history and his passion left an indelible mark on our community. Our CIMPN team member, Samara O’Gorman, worked closely with Alan on the Irish language translations for his book, One Long Line of Marvel. They quickly became friends and the two bonded over shared author stories, their love for Montreal, and of course, the parade. He will be greatly missed by all.

Le CIMPN est profondément attristé d’apprendre le décès d'Alan Hustak, journaliste, auteur et historien de renom. Alan était une figure monumentale du monde de la documentation et de la préservation de l'histoire, et sa passion a laissé une marque indélébile sur notre communauté. Samara O’Gorman, membre de l'équipe du CIMPN, a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec Alan sur les traductions en langue irlandaise de son livre, One Long Line of Marvel. Ils sont rapidement devenus amis et se sont liés autour d'anecdotes d'auteurs, de leur amour pour Montréal et, bien sûr, du défilé. Il manquera énormément à tous.
