2026 Sustainability Champion spotlight - Nico Schutte 👏
Through excitement for biodiversity, hands-on leadership and ecological knowledge, Nico has helped shape a more regenerative and community-driven approach to sustainability at Concordia.
As a founding member of , they’ve supported the growth of campus food systems rooted in collaboration and ecological care by helping build spaces where sustainable practices can thrive long-term.
From mushroom cultivation and soil-building experiments to foraging education, native plant integration and biodiversity restoration, Nico has championed biodiversity and regenerative agriculture at . Their work has included planting milkweed to support monarch butterfly populations, growing two native pawpaw trees from seed, establishing six new ramp patches across campus and helping reintroduce the historic Montreal melon.
Thanks to seed-saving efforts from last year’s harvest, Montreal melon seeds will soon be available through the new seed library launching soon at the Vanier Library on Loyola campus, giving community members the chance to grow their own piece of local agricultural history.
As Nico steps away from their role at Coop CultivAction and Concordia to pursue new opportunities, we are happy to celebrate their contributions to sustainability at Concordia. They leave behind a lasting impact on the Concordia gardens and community. Their knowledge, leadership and care will be deeply missed but the spaces, species and relationships they helped cultivate will continue to grow, thank you Nico!
