For families affected by rare diseases, the path to answers is seldom straightforward. Diagnosis can take years, treatments are often limited, and navigating healthcare systems can be overwhelming.

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

Who says raising awareness can’t come with a smile? This , we’re sharing some puns inspired by patients and healthcare providers — because sometimes a little humor goes a long way in making the invisible, visible.

But behind every pun is a powerful truth: No two zebras have the same stripes, just like no two rare diseases are alike. Diagnosing rare conditions is like solving a clinical crossword, every clue matters, and every patient deserves a provider who will think outside the textbook.

At the Peer Medical Foundation, we believe that equitable, culturally sensitive healthcare means listening to every story, examining every gene, and approaching every patient with precision, compassion, and action, regardless of their background, nationality, or socio-economic status.

So today, let’s herd together for a rare cause! Whether you’re a patient, caregiver, researcher, or provider — your voice matters in the fight for inclusive healthcare and health equity for the rare disease community.

Tag someone who needs to see these puns and share the love! Which one is your favorite? Drop it in the comments below.

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

Montreal, QC – The Peer Medical Foundation is deeply concerned by the passage of Bill 2 by the Assemblée nationale du Québec.

While we support efforts to improve access and quality of care, linking physician compensation to government-set performance targets risks worsening physician well-being, reinforcing inequities, and compromising patient outcomes.

Bill 2’s narrow focus on clinical metrics disregards physicians’ broader contributions — including teaching, research, mentorship, and advocacy — which are essential to a strong, equitable, and inclusive health system.

The Peer Medical Foundation envisions a world where healthcare environments are inclusive of historically underrepresented groups, equitable care is accessible and affordable, and professionals foster safe spaces for all people, regardless of background, color, beliefs, or socio-economic status. Real progress toward that vision requires collaboration, sustainable investment, and meaningful engagement with those who deliver care.

We urge the Quebec government to work with physicians and healthcare professionals to build solutions that strengthen care access while advancing equity, inclusion, and justice across the health system.

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

If you are committed to advancing equity in medicine and understanding how systems of confinement shape health and healing, you are invited to join the Peer Medical Foundation for Dismantling Barriers: Care in Confinement. This workshop will examine the structural barriers faced by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals and highlight how we can reimagine care practices rooted in justice, inclusivity, and compassion.

We are honored to feature Eugene Youngblood, who was arrested at 18 and sentenced to life in prison. After nearly 30 years behind bars, his sentence was commuted in 2019, and he was released in 2021. During his incarceration, Eugene dedicated himself to mentorship and advocacy, transforming his own life while supporting others inside. Today, he serves as the Director of Community Organizing for Look2Justice, working to advance fairness and accountability in Washington State’s criminal legal system through civic education and empowerment.

Eugene’s story of resilience and leadership offers a powerful lens into the intersections of confinement, health, and justice. Join us to learn, reflect, and act together in building a more inclusive and equitable future in medicine.

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

Bias has no place in healthcare.
Islamophobia can create barriers that harm patients’ safety, trust, and wellbeing. In medicine, every person — regardless of faith — deserves care that is respectful, equitable, and compassionate.

When we dismantle prejudice, we build a system where healing is truly for all.

Join us in saying:
“Faith should never be a barrier to care — dismantling Islamophobia ensures every patient receives respectful, equitable, and compassionate treatment.”

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

If you’re interested in understanding the importance of cultural competence in medicine and how we can combat discrimination, you are invited to join the Peer Medical Foundation for an insightful workshop on addressing Islamophobia in healthcare. This event will explore the challenges faced by Muslim patients and healthcare professionals and discuss actionable steps to create a more inclusive and equitable medical environment.

Islamophobia refers to prejudice, discrimination, and hostility directed towards Islam and Muslims. This can manifest in biased treatment, miscommunication, and a lack of culturally sensitive care in healthcare. This workshop will focus on how healthcare providers can recognize and dismantle these biases, ensuring that all patients receive compassionate and competent care regardless of their religious background.

We are honored to welcome our distinguished guest speaker, Professor Liyakat Takim, the Sharjah Chair in Global Islam at McMaster University. Born in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Dr. Takim is a leading voice on Islam in the Western diaspora and has authored more than 140 academic works, including Shi‘ism Revisited: Ijtihad and Reformation in Contemporary Times (Oxford University Press, 2022). His research covers Islamic law, spirituality, diaspora communities, gender, and Islamophobia—making him uniquely positioned to guide this conversation.

With profound knowledge and global experience, Dr. Takim will explore the intersections of faith, equity, and medical ethics. Whether you’re a student, clinician, educator, or advocate, this session offers the tools to foster a more just and inclusive healthcare space.

Listen to Dr. Takim dismantle bias, build bridges, and reimagine medicine with equity at its core.

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

This , let’s commit to dismantling anti-Black racism in healthcare. 🏥✊🏿

Black patients continue to face disparities in pain management, maternal health, and overall medical treatment. As healthcare providers, we have the power—and responsibility—to do better.

There are a few ways to start and that means acknowledging and challenging implicit biases, providing equitable care & building trust with Black patients. We need to advocate for diversity in medical leadership and address barriers to care to ensure health equity.

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

At PMF, we believe that accessibility is not a privilege but a fundamental human right. It is essential that every individual, regardless of background or ability, has the opportunity to receive equitable and compassionate care. Healthcare should be inclusive, ensuring that all patients can access the services they need, free from barriers or discrimination.

Accessibility means creating healthcare environments where every patient, including those with disabilities, can navigate with dignity and receive the care they deserve. By prioritizing accessibility, we uphold human rights, foster equity, and promote a culture of respect in healthcare.

We can all do our part to break down barriers and make healthcare accessible for everyone.

Healthcare providers have a duty to respect, affirm, and advocate for trans, non-binary, and intersex patients. From using correct pronouns to providing evidence-based care, every step matters.

💡 Tip: Create a safe and affirming space by listening, learning, and committing to patient-centered care.

Dear Friends of the Peer Medical Foundation,

“Navigating the healthcare system as a Black q***r disabled youth has been a journey marked by tenacity, advocacy, and the constant struggle for validation. Since the tender age of 11, I’ve gained experience—unfortunately not just the typical experiences of childhood, but those of grappling with a body that doesn’t always cooperate and a system that often fails to understand or support me.”
