Watershed Wednesday 🌊🌿
Our watersheds connect land, water, wildlife, and people. Each week we’ll share a simple fact or stewardship tip to help protect the waterways we all depend on.

Today’s Topic: Why pH Matters 🧪🐟

Water quality is about more than what we can see. One important measure is pH, which tells us how acidic or basic water is. Most fish, aquatic insects, and plants thrive within a specific pH range. When pH levels become too high or too low, it can affect growth, reproduction, and overall ecosystem health.

By monitoring pH, scientists can better understand water quality and identify changes that may impact aquatic life.

A healthy watershed helps maintain the balance that streams, rivers, and wildlife depend on.💧

Tip Tuesday 🌎💧
Protecting nature can start with small everyday choices. Each week we’ll share a quick tip to help keep PEI’s landscapes, waterways, and wildlife healthy.

Today’s Tip: Skip a Mow!🚜🌱

Did you know you don't need to mow your lawn every week?
Allowing your grass to grow a little longer helps protect the soil, retain moisture during dry periods, and provides valuable habitat for insects and other small wildlife. 🐝🦋

A slightly longer lawn can also develop deeper roots, making it more resilient during hot summer weather. Sometimes giving nature a little extra room to grow can make a big difference! 🌎💚

Small actions can make a big difference for local biodiversity.

Wild Fact Monday! 🐾
PEI’s landscapes are home to amazing wildlife, plants, and habitats. Each Monday we’ll share a quick fact to help you learn more about the environment we all share.

Today’s fact is: Think you're good at your job?
Did you know dragonflies are some of the most successful hunters on Earth? 🤯

Dragonflies catch an incredible 95% of the prey they target, making them far more effective hunters than lions, sharks, or even eagles! Their large eyes can see in nearly every direction, and they can fly forwards, backwards, sideways, and even hover like a helicopter. 🚁

What's even wilder? Dragonflies have been around for over 300 million years—long before dinosaurs walked the Earth! 🌎🦖
Next time you spot a dragonfly zipping around a pond or wetland, you're looking at one of nature's oldest and most efficient predators. 🐉✨

Throwback Thursday 🌾
From restoration projects and community events to partnerships and recognitions, we’re taking a step back each week to highlight the work and achievements that have supported healthy ecosystems across PEI.

Today’s Throwback is: The Great Backyard Bird Count! ❄️☀️🐦
On February 16th 2024, SEA’s staff were out enjoying a beautiful winter day along the Montague Waterfront for the Great Backyard Bird Count!

Community members joined us for a winter stroll along the Confederation Trail, using binoculars to spot local bird species before taking home free bird seed and locally made suet packs to keep the birdwatching fun going at home.

Events like these are a great reminder that connecting with nature can happen in every season — sometimes all it takes is a walk, a pair of binoculars, and a little curiosity.

Looking back shows the power of collaboration and the impact of environmental stewardship in our communities.

Watershed Wednesday 💧
Every week we share a quick tip or fact about watersheds and why they matter. Healthy streams, wetlands, and rivers help support wildlife, clean water, and strong communities.

Today’s Topic: “🎵 The Streams they are a are Changin’🎵” I think that’s what Bob Dylan said anyways 🤷‍♂️ 🤔😂

Stream flow changes throughout the year due to snowmelt, rainfall, drought, and groundwater levels. These seasonal shifts influence water temperature, oxygen levels, water quality, and the habitats available for fish and aquatic insects. 💧🐟

During spring runoff, streams often flow faster and higher, while hot summer conditions can lower water levels and warm the water, creating stress for cold-water species like trout. Groundwater helps maintain flow during dry periods and keeps streams cooler throughout the summer months. 🌿

Understanding how streams change seasonally helps watershed groups and scientists better protect healthy aquatic ecosystems year-round. 🌎

SEA works to protect and restore watersheds across southeastern Prince Edward Island so our ecosystems, wildlife, and communities can thrive.

Today’s Tip: 🚰 Every Drop Counts

It’s easy to overlook how much water we use in our daily routines, but small actions can make a big difference over time! Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing dishes can save litres of water each day. 🌎

Fresh water is one of our most valuable natural resources, and conserving it helps reduce pressure on local water systems, groundwater supplies, and aquatic ecosystems. Healthy watersheds support fish, wildlife, wetlands, and the communities that rely on clean water every day. 🐟🌿

Simple habits at home can have a positive impact across our environment — because when it comes to protecting our watersheds, every drop truly counts! 💙

🌿✨ That’s a wrap on SEA’s Connecting Nature Series! ✨🌿

Over the past several months, we’ve had the pleasure of bringing people together through trail walks, nature connection, creativity, conversation, and community. From exploring beautiful outdoor spaces to sharing laughs during our art sessions, this series was a wonderful reminder of the power nature has to connect us all. 💚

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, participated, supported, and helped make this series such a success. Special thanks to our amazing partners at Go! East, our facilitators, volunteers, and all of the participants who brought such positive energy to every event. 🌱

We would also like to sincerely thank the Government of Prince Edward Island’s Wellness Grant Program for funding this initiative and helping make these experiences possible for communities across PEI. 🇨🇦

This may be the end of the series, but it’s only the beginning of more exciting programming and community connections to come through SEA. Stay tuned — there’s lots more ahead! 🌎✨

Today’s fact is: The Beach “Actor” 🎭
Did you know a Piping Plover will sometimes pretend to have a broken wing to protect its babies? 👀

When predators or people get too close to a nest, the adult plover may stumble away acting injured to lure the threat away from its eggs or chicks hidden in the sand. Once the danger is gone… surprise! The bird suddenly “recovers” and flies away. ✈️

This clever survival trick is called a distraction display, and it’s one of nature’s most impressive parenting strategies. 💚

Piping Plovers are an endangered species in Canada, and PEI’s beaches play an important role in helping them survive. Small actions like respecting fenced nesting areas and keeping dogs leashed can make a big difference. 🌊

Yesterday, SEA had the pleasure of attending the Annual General Meeting of the PEI Senior Citizens' Federation 🌿💙

We had an awesome time connecting with so many amazing people and were excited to announce that the PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation has been selected as a collaborator in SEA’s Connecting Seniors to Nature Through Technology and Teaching (CSNTT) project, funded by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program 🇨🇦

Through this partnership, we look forward to working together to bring exciting new opportunities, nature-based programming, technology initiatives, and community connections to seniors across Prince Edward Island.

Keep your eyes and ears open… big things are coming for Island seniors! 🌱📸🦋
