[ The Living Bridge Across Centuries ]
How does a 2,500-year-old lineage of wisdom stay alive today?
Not on dusty library shelves, but through the vibrant voices of the next generation.
Right here on Prince Edward Island, a dedicated group of young students is doing something extraordinary. They aren’t just reading history—they are stepping into a profound lineage of mind-training.
By engaging with the Five Major Treatises, they tackle the same deep questions that have challenged humanity’s greatest minds for centuries:
‌Logic: How do we prove what is true?
‌Mind & Emotion: How do we understand human consciousness?
‌Reality: What is the ultimate nature of existence?
These profound texts—rooted in ancient India by masters like Nagarjuna, and preserved over centuries by great Tibetan scholars like Jetsun Jamyang Shaypa—are much more than religious studies. They are blueprints for logic, deep psychology, and human flourishing.
In an age of constant digital distraction, seeing these young people dedicate their youth to mastering these complex philosophies in Tibetan is nothing short of inspiring.
Every rigorous debate held here in PEI forms a living bridge, connecting ancient roots to the modern world, ensuring this timeless wisdom remains accessible for generations to come. 🌟

[Good food, good conversation, and good neighbours]

We recently welcomed local neighbours to the Monastery for an evening of homemade Asian food, friendship, and community.

Some neighbours met each other for the first time, our young monks enjoyed practising their English, and guests explored a display of student artwork.

One particularly memorable moment came when Venerable Vincent gifted one of his squirrel paintings to a neighbour who admired it.

By the end of the evening, everyone was already asking when the next gathering would be.

We are grateful for the friendships that continue to grow between the Monastery and our local community. ❤️

【 Beginning the Summer Retreat 🌿 】

This week, the monastic community at Monastery formally entered the annual Summer Retreat, a tradition that dates back more than 2,500 years to the time of the Buddha.

In the early Buddhist tradition, monks would remain in one place during the rainy season, dedicating themselves to study, contemplation, community life, and spiritual practice. Today, this tradition continues in monasteries around the world.

As part of the ceremony, monks participate in simple but meaningful rituals. One is the washing of the hands, symbolizing the aspiration to cultivate a clear and wholesome mind. Another is the receiving of a traditional token, representing each monk’s commitment to the retreat period ahead.

For the next several months, the community will focus on study, practice, and service, following a tradition that has been passed down from teacher to student for generations.

We are grateful to be able to continue this living heritage here on Prince Edward Island and are pleased to share a few moments from the ceremony with our friends and neighbours.

[Study, Memory, and a Living Tradition]

This weekend, our Academy held memorization exams in the Tibetan-language curriculum.

Students are required, depending on level, to memorize 1,000 to 2,000 words from classical Buddhist texts and commentaries—works composed by great Indian and Tibetan scholars.

What is remarkable is that many of these students are not Tibetan (བོད་པ་)by birth. Yet through steady discipline and guidance from their teachers, they study and memorize these texts in Tibetan(བོད་ཡིག་).
Here in Prince Edward Island, a living tradition of learning continues quietly. It is not only about preserving texts, but about carrying forward a way of training the mind through study, reflection, and memorization.

Each page remembered is part of a continuity that spans centuries and continents.

We rejoice in the dedication of all students and teachers, and wish them success in their exams.
