Getting to Know GEBIS | From Neighbours to Family ❤️
On Prince Edward Island, turning 90, 95, or 100 is a milestone, often marked with a birthday greeting from a Member of Parliament.
For Venerable Panny, a birthday is simply one more good reason to visit a dear neighbour he already sees throughout the year. Over time, the visits have become less like "visits" and more like dropping in on family.
📸 This year (96th birthday): Cake, laughter, and a very happy golden retriever tagging along. The conversation picked up right where it left off. 🐶
📸 A year ago (95th birthday): Cookies, mooncakes, and a card shared at the kitchen table, just as we often do.
True neighbourliness isn't built in a day. It grows through small, everyday gestures: checking in, sharing a smile, and being there on ordinary days, so that special days feel natural too.
For our monastics, being part of the PEI community means building genuine relationships with the people around us, relationships that, over time, can grow as close as family.
We are grateful for the neighbours who welcome us so warmly. Because being a good neighbour is about making sure someone knows they are remembered, valued, and cared for, on birthdays and every day in between. ❤️

Getting to Know GEBIS — Episode 9: What We Hope to Contribute to the Island
Our interviewer asked how the monastery could help Prince Edward Island move forward.
Honestly, the most important thing for us is to be a positive part of the community. If people become healthier, happier, and more peaceful because of what we do, then we've already contributed something meaningful.
Economic benefits may follow, but that has never been our primary goal. Our mission is to preserve Tibetan Buddhism and help people cultivate inner peace.
We also want to share a little more about how the monastery connects with the Island.
Before COVID, about 4,000 overseas visitors came to the monastery every year, mostly from Asia. Today, it's about 2,000 to 3,000. Many stay in local accommodations, eat at local restaurants, and explore the Island during their visits.
Not everything can be counted. We've donated to the QEH, KCMH, and Souris hospitals, shared masks with frontline workers during the pandemic, and continue to prepare meal packs for neighbours in need.
We hope to do more, and we're grateful to be part of this Island.

It has been 22 years since Master Jih-chang passed away, and the work he started is still growing: across Asia, the Americas, Europe, and in many other places around the world. 🌍
His kindness has comforted countless people. His wisdom continues to guide us, lifetime after lifetime. And his courage made something remarkable possible: a practical education of the heart and mind, one that has truly changed lives.
Everyone he has touched carries his gratitude in their heart, and tonight we remember him together.
Because of his teachings, our lives are more peaceful and joyful. We are able to bring light to ourselves, and to share that light with others. In this way, even our everyday world becomes a place of beauty and warmth. ✨
🙏 This evening, our community gathered for a Guru Puja, a traditional ceremony of gratitude and remembrance, in honor of the anniversary of Master Jih-chang's passing in 2004.

Weaving a Radiant World
When we approach each day
like creating a quilt,
our hearts are full of more positive thoughts,

abounding in radiant colours.
As our own suffering and joy
are rightly intertwined with those of others,

A big thank you to the Silver Maple Seniors Club of Miscouche for visiting us in Montague! 🍂
49 wonderful guests came from Prince County by bus, and the smiles started the moment they stepped off. We heard the excitement about visiting the monastery had been building since the sign-ups, and we were so happy to welcome you all.
It was a joy to chat with many of our monks, tour the main hall, and learn a little more about each other. We're also touched to hear that you already knew so much about us!
Thank you for all your kind compliments on the food. By now you know the monks are not only famous for their bread rolls, but also for our pumpkin soup, fried rice, and cakes.... 🎃🍰
Our door is always open. Come back anytime, and bring a friend!

In Buddhism, we're taught to pause before every meal and reflect: how many people, and how much of nature, made this possible?
This year, that reflection feels especially close to home. 🙏
🌾 Thank you to the Island's soil, sun, and rain.
🥕 Thank you to the farmers and neighbours who share their harvest with us, and to everyone who joined us at the PEI Harvest Moon Celebration.
🥟 Thank you to the many hands that prepare a meal, whether in a monastery kitchen or around your family table.
🍎 And thank you, PEI, for welcoming us into your community.
Gratitude isn't only for one day of the year. But today, we're glad to say it out loud.

Thank You, Montague! 🌕
On October 10, the Montague Waterfront came alive for the first PEI Harvest Moon Celebration, and it was more wonderful than we could have hoped.
It began early, with a chilly morning, a lot of hands, and a lot of care. Our monastics spent the day setting up the entrance boards, lantern walkway, tents, and stage, working carefully and cheerfully. By evening, the waterfront was glowing with lanterns, filled with food, music, and laughter.
To every vendor, thank you for sharing your craft with us. To every Islander who came, brought family, and stayed to chat, thank you for filling the park with warmth. To our volunteers, thank you for the early mornings and cold hands, and for working so hard to make everything feel welcoming. And to our monastics, thank you for pouring your hearts into this.
This was our first time hosting something on this scale, and the response has truly moved us. Many of you asked if we would do it again next year. We would love to. 🏮
Come for the moon. Stay for the food. We’ll see you again. 🌾

🧂 Cottage Country Lane (Murray River), by Paul and Sheila Eckersley: flavoured cooking salts, a little sprinkle of local flavour to brighten your kitchen.
🍎 The Branch Apple Farm (Montague), by David McGuire: bagged apples in 5, 10 and 20 lb sizes, plus Spark Fizzy Apple Mocktails to sip on.
🥐 Riverhouse Ice Cream & Bakery (Montague), by Siu Yee: freshly baked artisan bakery treats, plus fresh brewed coffee and milk tea.
🏛️ The Mair Family Museum (Georgetown), by Therese Mair: a collection of odds and ends from the past. Meet Therese, browse the oddities, and watch the kids enjoy the scavenger hunt!
And that's not all! Come and enjoy the monks' home-grown farm produce, delicious food cooked by our volunteers, fun games, and beautiful lanterns. 🏮
