Gather round all ye who need some spookiness in your life to prepare for Hubcity Theatreās chilling āThe Woman In Blackā. Today we share with you Monctonās most notorious tale of witchcraft, murder and poltergeistsā¦ the Legend of Rebeccaās Grave!
During the 1870s, the Moncton community was dealing with illness, poor crops and disappearing livestock. Obviously, the locals wouldnāt blame the weather, poor resource management, or the possibility of the animals co-investing in a timeshare down south, so they did the next most logical thing, they blamed it on a 16-year-old girl named Rebecca Lutes.Rebecca was accused of being a witch who caused the areaās misfortunes by dabbling in the dark arts and cavorting with Satan. After what weāre sure was a lengthy and even-handed trial, the teenager was found guilty of witchcraft and hanged from a tree near what is now known as Gorge Road.
However, this is where the mob-fueled murder of an innocent youth takes a dark turnā¦
Fearing that her co**se would return from the dead and seek revenge, Rebecca Lutesā grave was covered with a layer of thick concrete to permanently seal her inside. She was also buried face down because Monctonās elders reasoned that if she returned from the dead and attempted to dig herself out, she would dig farther into the earth instead of reaching the surface.
Aside: While there are no scientific studies on how fast a reanimated co**se can dig we can confirm that, in the last 130 years, no Atlantic Canadian zombies have surfaced in Australia or China. For over a century, locals and visitors alike have experienced sightings of strange lights and floating orbs in the Lutes mountain area. Others have experienced unexplained vehicle trouble and still more have suffered mysterious scratches on their bodies while walking in the vicinity of Rebeccaās burial site.
Like all stories of witchcraft and hauntings, the story of Rebecca Lutesā death, burial and possible resurgence has been hotly debated. Was Rebecca Lutes really a witch who dabbled in the occult to curse her town in life and death? Obviously, the answer is āYESā. After all, the only other possible explanation is that a bunch of scared, old men used an innocent girl as a scapegoat to avoid taking responsibility for their own shortcomingsā¦ and THAT is what would be truly unbelievable.
