If you have a toddler, you already know that big feelings can arrive out of nowhere, over the wrong cup color, a broken cracker, or a sock that doesn’t feel right. And in those moments it can feel impossible to know what to do.

Here’s what’s important to understand: toddlers are not being dramatic and they are not manipulating you! Their brains are genuinely not yet equipped to handle the intensity of what they feel. The prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for reasoning, impulse control, and emotional regulation, is barely online at this age. What they’re experiencing in a meltdown is a full nervous system flood, and they have absolutely no tools to get themselves out of it alone.

That’s where you come in!

You don’t need to fix the feeling or stop the tears; you just need to be the calm, safe presence their nervous system can borrow from until the storm passes. And every time you show up for them in those moments, you are literally helping their brain build the neural pathways for regulation that they will carry for the rest of their life.

Here are 12 ways to help your toddler through big emotions:

👉🏼 Stay calm and present: your nervous system sets the tone for theirs.
👉🏼 Get down to their level: eye contact and a soft voice help them feel seen.
👉🏼 Validate their feelings: “it’s okay to feel mad” goes further than “calm down.”
👉🏼 Offer physical comfort: a hug or held hand can bring instant safety.
👉🏼 Encourage deep breaths: model it yourself first.
👉🏼 Reduce overstimulation: a quieter space helps their nervous system reset.
👉🏼 Offer limited choices: giving some control reduces the overwhelm.
👉🏼 Distract or redirect gently: a favorite toy or activity can shift the moment.
👉🏼 Use movement: jumping, running, or dancing helps release big feelings physically.
👉🏼 Keep routines consistent: predictability creates safety and reduces meltdowns.
👉🏼 Praise and reassure: positive words build their confidence and calm.
👉🏼 Be patient: regulation is a skill, and it takes time and a lot of love.

Every child is different, and getting to know your child’s specific needs is part of the journey. But the essence is always the same: connection and regulation first, and only then are they truly open to learning and guidance.

You cannot teach a child who doesn’t feel safe, and you cannot discipline a child whose nervous system is still flooded. Lead with love, and the rest follows. ❤️

🌿 We may spend most of our days helping children and families grow, but today we helped a few gardens grow too!

Today, a few members of the FECAE team were proud to participate in the United Way's annual Day of Caring event, spending the day gardening and landscaping at a local senior's residence. Our crew has been hard at work helping to create a welcoming outdoor space for residents to enjoy throughout the season.

Thank you to the United Way - Greater Moncton & SENB, Centraide - Grand Moncton & SENB for bringing people together through service, connection, and care. 💚

⏳ The Power of Waiting

Waiting can be hard, especially for young children.

Whether it's waiting for a snack, a turn with a toy, or an exciting event, waiting is a skill that develops over time.

The good news? Everyday moments provide opportunities to practice.

When children wait, they're learning to:
🌱 Manage big feelings
🌱 Build patience
🌱 Develop self-regulation skills
🌱 Understand that not every need can be met immediately

If your child struggles with waiting, remember: they're not giving you a hard time, they're having a hard time. Waiting requires skills that are still developing, and children need practice and support to build them.

Try helping children through waiting times by:
✨ Using a visual timer
✨ Talking about what will happen next
✨ Singing a song or reading a book to pass the time together
✨ Offering a simple task while they wait
✨ Counting down together
✨ Playing "I Spy"
✨ Acknowledging their feelings ("Waiting can feel really hard!")
✨ Practicing waiting during play with turn-taking games
✨ Praising their efforts ("You waited so patiently!")

Like any skill, waiting gets easier with practice and support.

Small moments of waiting today help build important life skills for tomorrow. 💙

📬🏃‍♀️ Movement Monday: Special Delivery! 🏃‍♂️📬

This week's challenge turns your child into a busy delivery driver!

Place baskets, boxes, or containers around your home and label them as different destinations. Then invite your child to deliver letters, packages, stuffed animals, or other small items using different ways of moving:

📮 Walk to one address
🦘 Hop to the next
🐻 Bear walk down the street
✈️ Fly like an airplane to make a special delivery

Not only does this activity encourage gross motor skills, balance, coordination, and body awareness, but it also sparks imaginative play. As children pretend to be mail carriers, delivery drivers, couriers, or community helpers, they're building creativity, problem-solving skills, and confidence through play.

Want to keep the fun going? Try adapting the game to other professions:

🍽️ Restaurant Server - Deliver meals to different tables
🚒 Firefighter - Bring water to put out pretend fires
🩺 Doctor - Deliver medicine to stuffed animal patients
📚 Librarian - Return books to their proper shelves

A little imagination can turn everyday movement into a whole new adventure!

🍦 I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream! 🍦

Today, we took a moment to celebrate Early Learning and Child Care Week with a lunchtime ice cream social.🍨

Here's the scoop: the early years are filled with moments of learning, growth, discovery, and connection, all made possible by dedicated professionals who show up each day with patience, creativity, compassion, and care. ✨

This week, we're especially celebrating our amazing FECAE team and the difference they make in the lives of children and families every day, while also recognizing the many wonderful colleagues across the early years community who help children and families learn, grow, and thrive. 🫶

Thank you for bringing the sprinkles of joy, the scoops of encouragement, and the sweetness of connection to the work you do every day. 🍦💕

We hope your Early Learning and Child Care Week is as sweet as the difference you make every day. 🍨

Happy Early Learning and Child Care Week! 💙

🫧 It's Movement Monday and we're bubbling over with excitement! 🫧

This week's activity is simple, inexpensive, and guaranteed to get children moving. Grab some bubbles and get ready to chase, jump, stretch, and pop your way through active play! ☀️🫧

Grab a bottle of bubbles and head outside. Encourage your child to:

🫧 Run and chase bubbles before they float away
🫧 Jump to reach high bubbles
🫧 Squat down to pop low bubbles
🫧 Balance on one foot while trying to catch them
🫧 Count how many they can pop in 30 seconds

Bubble play helps build coordination, balance, motor skills, and spatial awareness, all while feeling like pure fun.

Don't have any bubbles on hand? It's easy to make your own with this homemade bubble recipe 🫧

Mix together:
• 1 cup water
• 2 tablespoons dish soap
• 1 tablespoon corn syrup (or glycerin, if you have it)

Gently stir and let sit for about an hour for stronger, longer-lasting bubbles.

No bubble wand? Try a slotted spoon, cookie cutter, pipe cleaner bent into a circle, or even your hands!

What we love most about bubbles is that they encourage children to move their bodies, follow their curiosity, and enjoy active play without needing any fancy equipment.
