Amazing! Great job!
On June 3, 2026, what began as a devastating house fire quickly turned into a story of courage and life-saving heroism.
Members of the Codiac Regional RCMP and the Dieppe Fire Department responded to a report of a residential fire, on Peupliers Street, in Dieppe, with early information indicating that children may still be trapped inside the home.
When officers and firefighters arrived at the location, they were relieved to learn that most occupants had made it out safely. What they didn’t yet realize, however, was that without the actions of one of their own, the outcome could have been far more tragic.
Off-duty Constable Xavier Mayer-St-Marie, who lives nearby, had just finished his workday when he noticed the fire. Without hesitation, he rushed to the scene to ensure everyone was safe. But then, when he learned that a child was still trapped inside, his instincts and concern took over, and he ran into the burning home.
After searching through thick smoke, he found the missing child hiding in the hallway as flames began to close in. Frightened, alone, crying and unsure of what to do, the child had nowhere to go. With no time to lose, Constable Mayer-St-Marie carried the child to safety, an act that undoubtedly saved a young life.
Upon recognizing the structure as a duplex and observing the fire spreading to the adjoining unit, Cst. Mayer-St-Marie noted a vehicle in the driveway and had no confirmation that the occupant(s) had exited. He immediately returned, breached the door, entered and confirmed there was no occupants.
Emergency Medical Services subsequently attended the scene and confirmed that no one was injured, thanks to Constable Mayer-St‑Marie’s swift and decisive actions.
In the face of extreme danger, Constable Mayer-St-Marie’s bravery and selflessness made the difference between tragedy and survival. His actions reflect the very best of policing, courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others, both on duty and off.
A child is safe today because he did what had to be done. Beyond the uniform and the badge, it was his instinct as a human being to act without hesitation in the face of danger, and that decision made all the difference.
