Martial Arts Saved My life
I grew up in foster care when I was 8 years old and transitioned out when I turned 18. I got “Extended Care and Maintenance” ECM which was a monthly allowance of $663 per month. I chilled with my friends, worked the odd jobs here and there went to school but didn’t go to class, hung out with the wrong crowd and got into trouble but stayed out of jail. Eventually after drifting for so long I met a Master (5th Degree) of Kempo Karate. As I walked passed him I said “Karate eh” and he said”C’mon in” and I circumvented into the room faster then a salmon swimming up stream. On that day I did more pushups, sit ups, jumping jacks, and lunges then you could count. It was after class outside the mall where the “dojo” was, till I realized that this was “it”. I suddenly became aware that karate was going to help me quit smoking and build the discipline and focus I needed to be successful. I immidiately signed up, and needless to say I stuck with it for the next 15 years. Now I can’t say my life has been perfect, but at current I own and operate my own martial arts dojo, and not only do I specialize in Karate and Kung fu, but in all aspects of self-defence, street smarts, and hand-to-hand combat. Due to the Post Traumatic Stress I picked up while I was in care, that and whole bunch of other disorders began to surface and seemingly added up. I got fed up and started a program that helps youth transition from government care to independence.
