Deaf Muslims of Canada - DMC To provide accessibility to Islamic information for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Muslims by increasing the resources available in American Sign Language (ASL)

DMC is a registered Canadian charity with the aim of breaking the communication barriers that Deaf Muslims face when establishing and advancing their knowledge in Islam. Our goal is to make Islamic resources fully accessible to the Deaf through a variety of services including:

- Training interpreters on Islamic terms and signs
- Setting up Islamic classes tailored to the Deaf community
- Starting

the first Islamic Deaf school for youth in Canada
- Teaching parents ASL so they can communicate with their Deaf children
- Due to COVID-19, hosting these classes & workshops online for families, youth and young children
- Translating the Quran into American Sign Language (ASL)
- Creating a video library of Islamic resources in ASL that can be accessed worldwide
- Providing accessibility for sermons and prayers at local mosques & Islamic centers
- Booking interpreters for religious celebrations as well as Islamic workshops, conferences and conventions
- Partnering with other organizations to make their events accessible
- Setting up booths at events to raise funds through merchandise sales & spread awareness about the challenges faced by Deaf Muslims
- Providing contract work opportunities for the community (Deaf ASL Hosts & Hearing note-takers)

Our Story

Deaf Muslims of Canada (DMC) is a registered Canadian charity with the aim of breaking the communication barriers that Deaf Muslims face when establishing and advancing their knowledge in Islam. Our goal is to make community resources completely accessible to the Deaf through a variety of services in American Sign Language (ASL) including: - Raising awareness about the challenges faced by the Deaf - Training interpreters on Islamic terms and signs so that they are able to interpret in a religious setting and context - Setting up Islamic classes with interpreters - the curriculum addressing the knowledge level of a Deaf audience - Creating a library of Islamic resources in ASL that can be accessed worldwide - Approaching organizers to make their events accessible in ASL - Arranging for interpreters at local mosques to translate sermons & prayers - Arranging for interpreters at festivities (e.g. Eid, Ramadan, Holy night celebrations) as well as Islamic workshops, conferences, and conventions - Providing short-term project work-opportunities for members of the community (Deaf ASL hosts as well as Hearing note-takers)
