The idea was sparked by an eight year old girl named Sebra. She has spent the last two years coping with a stark reality of surviving inside a refugee camp. For the next six hours, Sebra would be my tour guide around muddy ground, makeshift tents, worn out clothes and welcoming faces. She pulled me over to a tent where she whispered something in Arabic to her friend. After disappearing for a few s

econds inside the tent, her friend returned with a dress. Not just any dress, but a delicate masterpiece of different shades of purple, with a tailored shape and finished off with a crocheted flower near the collar. She explained it was her mother who thought her how to crochet so well. Unfortunately, it was in that moment the real guides instructed us to say farewell to the children and begin to exit. As I said my goodbyes, Sebra voiced her concerns. Souf meant yarn, and there was none left for her and friends to work with. I made her a promise which I intend on keeping- I would return with yarn. As I slowly began walking away, as instructed, I asked 'in what colour?' Sebra jumped and yelled ‘purple!’, then her friend behind her yelled ‘I want yellow!’ and the one behind her ‘ I want green!’…
