As Black History Month approaches, we’re thinking about legacy. Shannon Tavares was a Broadway star at just 10 years old. She needed a stem donor to save her life. She couldn’t find one. Not because people didn’t care but because Black donors are underrepresented in worldwide registeries including Canada. (2% representation). This is how we honour Black History. Myth Monday: "If I join the stem cell registry, people will have access to my personal information."

This is false.

When you join the Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry, only your HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue type is stored in a secure, searchable database. Your name, address, and contact information are kept confidential. Hospitals, transplant centers, and potential recipients do not have access to your identity.

Your information remains private unless you are identified as a match for a patient in need. Joining the registry is a safe and secure way to potentially save someone's life.
