πŸš—πŸ‘ Did you know that one of the wildest sports ever invented once came to Mississauga?

Imagine a combination of polo, car racing, and a demolition derby. Now imagine playing it at speeds of up to 64 km/h while hanging off the side of a moving car with a giant mallet in hand. Welcome to the world of Auto Polo!

This unusual motorsport sensation swept North America in the 1910s and 1920sβ€”and it even made appearances at the Cooksville Agricultural Fair. Historic photographs and newspaper accounts reveal that crowds gathered to watch these thrilling (and often chaotic!) matches right here in Mississauga.

Our latest Way Back Wednesday article explores the fascinating history of Auto Polo, how the game was played, why it became so popular, and its surprising connection to Cooksville.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡Ή Happy Portugal Day!

Did you know that the story of Portuguese settlement in Mississauga began more than 70 years ago?

In 1954, the first Portuguese immigrants arrived in Mississauga, many from the Azores and Madeira islands. Starting their new lives at the Lever Mushroom Farm in Lakeview, they built communities, supported one another, established homes and businesses, and helped shape the cultural fabric of our city.

Today, we celebrate the generations of Portuguese Canadians whose contributions have enriched Mississauga and continue to strengthen our diverse community.

Want to learn more? Explore our Heritage Diversity article, Portuguese Settlement in Mississauga, and discover how a small community of newcomers grew into one of the city's vibrant cultural communities. πŸ“– Read the article: https://heritagemississauga.com/portuguese/

Throughout the weekend, 2nd York participated in three battle reenactments commemorating the pivotal Battle of Stoney Creek of 1813, helping bring this important chapter of Canadian history to life for thousands of visitors.

πŸŒ• Demin Giizis – Strawberry Moon

June marks the 5th moon of the Anishinaabe lunar calendar, known as the Strawberry Moon (Demin Giizis).

Strawberries hold an important place in the cycle of life, as they are among the first fruits to ripen in the spring and signal the beginning of the thanksgiving cycle. πŸ“

This teaching reminds us to pause and give thanks for all that we receive β€” from the land, the seasons, and the relationships that sustain us.

✨ What are you giving thanks for as summer begins to bloom?
