“A brave little boy with muddy feet, a bucket by his side to spit out the blood and more courage than most adults. One extraction done, one filling to go, without complaint, just strength.

These children continue to inspire me with their resilience and gratitude. I’ve never felt more appreciated for the work I do than sitting on top of a mountain, miles from Wi-Fi or a signal of any sort, yet feeling more connected to humanity than ever before.

Thank you, Health Outreach, for experiences that change lives, including my own.”

- A story from Julia, one of our dental assistants who had joined many projects with Health Outreach 🫶🏼

‼️Help us make a difference‼️ Plz scroll for donation link 🤍

For over ten years, our team has been dedicated to supporting a village community by identifying their most pressing needs and rallying support to address them. Each year, we work closely with the community to understand what will make the biggest difference in their lives. In the past, thanks to the generosity of supporters, we have witnessed
📝new roofs for two children’s schools;
💧delivery of 75 water filters, ensuring access to clean water for families;
🛻 a new road that now connects the village to the river. Previously a 3 hour hike one way.

This year, the community has asked for help in providing new desks for the children at school. Currently, there are not enough desks, and many of the existing ones are in poor condition, making it difficult for the children to focus and learn comfortably. This will not only support their education but also make school a more enjoyable and welcoming place for everyone.

Please consider donating. When we come together we can create meaningful change. 🤍 link to donation below:

Health Outreach Dentistry for Honduras 2026 has successfully concluded after 26 days, with all three teams now home safely. The mission provided preventive and restorative dental care to hundreds of people in El Porvenir, Atlántida, Honduras—primarily children. A total of 260 individuals received dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, and oral health education, and more than 240 clinical appointments were completed, resulting in 456 fillings, 115 extractions, and 6 root canals. Partial dentures are also being prepared for select patients.
The outreach was made possible by 16 Canadian volunteers and more than a dozen Honduran volunteers, alongside many community members who supported the team through cooking, cleaning, transportation, and logistics. Care focused mainly on children from local schools and Helping Honduras Kids orphanage, where approximately 28 children received cleanings and 65 fillings. These children were noted for their excellent behavior, making treatment especially effective.
Despite early challenges that cast doubt on the project’s success, strong teamwork and leadership—particularly from Iris Carranza—helped overcome obstacles. Dr. Bill experienced a renewed sense of optimism and is already looking ahead to the 2027 mission. After 17 years of outreach, the team observed significant improvements in overall dental health within the community, with a growing sense that many patients’ needs are now being fully addressed rather than only partially met.
Dr. Bill expresses deep gratitude to all volunteers, donors, and supporters, and gives thanks to God for the success of the mission. Recruitment for Dentistry for Honduras 2027 will begin in the coming months, with an invitation extended to dental professionals seeking a meaningful, life‑changing experience.
Thank you to all of the volunteers and also to all of our donors that made donations directly to us or online at health outreach.ca. We could not have done this without you.

Dentistry for Honduras Team 3 - March 20th:
Another successful season volunteering in El Porvenir ended on a positive. Final stats for the three weeks are as follows: 238 total appointments, 456 fillings, 115 extractions, and 6 root canals. We had a fantastic last day, and the energy was high with our amazing volunteers and translators Hillary Murillo, Luci Lu Hines, and Summer Willingham. We’re leaving Honduras with optimism and joy in our hearts that we are seeing improvement in the oral health of the children here. Even the mayor made a special appearance today! It was wonderful having two 3rd year dental students assisting us this week, and we are sure that Justin Cusato and Garvin Tran will be back. Thank you to Katlyn Padilla and her husband Kelvin for their hospitality. Thank you to Sandra Slauenwhite-Box for arranging all of our travel and flights!

March 18 - Health Outreach Dentistry for Honduras Team 3:
Today we did 24 fillings and 8 extractions, bringing the total for all 3 weeks to 423 fillings and 104 extractions! Today went incredibly smooth compared to Tuesday and we were very thankful for power, light, and A/C. But as always happens during week 3, you start to get that sinking feeling that you won’t be able to finish everything that needs to be done. The kids from Semillas we saw today need much more work than the other kids we have seen the last two days. This tells us that we need to focus more on the dental and oral health education. Thankfully Luci Lu Hines and Robin spent some time teaching a waiting room full of kids how to brush! We were happy to meet a new volunteer named Summer today!

Dentistry in Honduras March 17th:
We surmounted many obstacles in the clinic today, and navigated a power outage that lasted 8am-4:30pm in a rainstorm! We juggled multiple compressors and innumerable extension cords to power our dental chairs and equipment (but no A/C or lights were working in the dental clinic). The generator worked well despite some hiccups, and we did the same number of fillings as yesterday - in the dark! We had lots of wonderful help from Iris, Hilary, Christian, and Iris' sister Elizabeth. The power came back on just as we finished the very last patient and we were able to pack up without any issues. After dinner, Layton tried on Garvin's shoes and we played a game of cards to wind down after a stressful but successful day.

March 15 post - Dr. Bill began 2026 Health Outreach Dentistry for Honduras journey with uncertainty and reduced enthusiasm compared to previous years. Early challenges reinforced concerns about the project’s sustainability, but as obstacles were overcome and plans fell into place, their optimism returned and reaffirmed the importance of continuing the program. Over two rewarding weeks, the team provided care to many Honduran children and prepared for the arrival of Team 3.
A particularly meaningful final clinic day included treating returning patients, caring for the clinic’s cooks and one cook’s daughter—a patient the author treated the previous year. The author retreated two reinfected root canals and coordinated follow-up whitening care with another dentist to restore the patient’s teeth properly. Despite a brief power outage on the last day, the team successfully completed treatment using remaining equipment and headlamps.
Over two weeks, the team completed 88 extractions, 355 fillings, and 6 root canals—an increase in restorative care compared to the previous year. Teams 1 and 2 returned home safely, while Team 3 arrived after a difficult travel day involving multiple delays and disruptions but ultimately reached Honduras without further issues.

Team 2 is nearing the end of its mission, with one clinic day remaining before returning to Canada. The team achieved a major milestone by completing a record number of fillings in Honduras—64 in one day, including 38 in a single morning—while treating children from David Ashby’s Helping Honduras Kids orphanage. One especially meaningful moment involved restoring a young girl’s front tooth, giving her a confident new smile.
The team addressed equipment challenges with the help of a dedicated local dental technician, ensuring sterilization could continue smoothly and setting things up for Team 3.
There were several emotional reunions with long-time Honduran patients, including some first treated as children years ago. While two long-standing root canals ultimately needed extraction, others remain functional, highlighting both the successes and challenges of long-term care in difficult conditions.
Care continued for a vulnerable woman facing both health challenges and difficult personal circumstances. Although partial dentures couldn’t be made on-site, arrangements were made—through trusted local support—to ensure she receives a denture and ongoing care.
After two weeks, Team 2’s impact is clear:
• Hygiene patients: 258
• Extractions: 78
• Fillings: 297
• Root canals: 4
Notably, fillings increased while extractions decreased, and more patients required no treatment or completed all necessary care—strong signs of improving dental health in the community. As the team prepares to head home, there’s a strong sense of progress and fulfillment.
