This was a serious missed opportunity for the Senate to support transparency, accountability, and scrutiny of Canada’s obligations.

We must remember, according to international law, the duty to prevent genocide requires action before final court rulings. Especially when Palestinians in Gaza continue to face mass killing, displacement, destruction of civilian life, and severe restrictions on food, water, medicine, and basic services, Canada’s obligations remain.

A defeated motion does not erase the duty to prevent genocide or avoid complicity. We call on the Canadian government to assess its complicity in the ongoing genocide.

An act of terrorism

Nathaniel Veltman was sentenced to life imprisonment and a terrorism designation, but that won't bring back the 5 innocent Canadians he murdered.

June 6th, 2026, marks the 5th anniversary of the horrific London Muslim family attack. 20-year old Nathaniel Veltman deliberately drove his truck into 5 members of the Afzaal family. That day, Yumnah Afzaal, 15, Madiha Salman, 44, Salman Afzaal, 46, and Talat Afzaal, 74, were killed by an act of deep hatred and Islamophobia.

The sentencing was a step toward accountability. But accountability after the fact is never enough. The real goal must be prevention. Terrorism, white supremacy, and Islamophobia have no place in Canada.

This anniversary is a reminder of our collective responsibility to confront the hate that endangers Muslim communities here at home and globally. The dehumanization of Palestinians, Uyghurs, Rohingya, Indian Muslims, and other targeted communities is not disconnected from the anti-Muslim rhetoric that circulates in Canada. It is the reason Veltman felt emboldened to commit a violent attack against Muslims. The same hate that empowers Israeli settlers to steal Palestinian homes. It is the same hate that gives permission to Hindutva mobs to set fire to Muslim-owned businesses, and when governments target Muslim minorities with impunity.

On this anniversary, we remember the Afzaal family. We honour their lives by demanding justice, accountability, and real action against Islamophobia in all its forms.

🔥 — Another missed opportunity:
Senate rejects Senator Yuen Pau Woo’s motion calling for Canada to examine its risk of complicity in genocide

Justice For All Canada is deeply disappointed by the Senate's decision to reject Senator Yuen Pau Woo's motion, which called on Canada’s government to examine the risk of Canadian complicity in genocide and other grave breaches of international law in Gaza. The motion was defeated on June 2, 2026, by a vote of 45 to 12, with three abstentions. This week’s vote followed Justice For All Canada’s Senate lobby day this past February, when our civil society delegation urged senators to support the motion.

🔵 Resource — “Another genocide behind walls”: New report documents testimonies of r**e and sexual violence against Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

A new report by Euro-Med describes how the Israeli torture system deliberately aims to break individual and collective will and inflicts severe physical and psychological harm upon Palestinian detainees. Stripped of their dignity and human rights, the unimaginable torture they experience cannot and must not be ignored.

Researchers expressed how difficult it was to get consent to document and record testimonies due to the nature of the torture. Knowing this, the true number of cases of sexual violence is likely much higher than reported.
