April 13, 2026 marked an important moment for the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada and for me .

With our leadership transition completed on April 5, I am honoured to help lead SHMC into its next chapter alongside a new board committed to carrying this work forward with purpose, courage, and clarity.

I had the privilege of attending the premiere of PROMISES. Congratulations to Steve Purewal () for his relentless work and leadership in bringing this important film forward. This work is part of shared efforts to correct a narrative that is long overdue for correction, to reflect on the promises that were made, and to acknowledge the challenges Sikh communities continue to face.

At the Canadian War Museum, the importance of that work was clear. Even in spaces dedicated to preserving national memory, Sikh contributions are still visibly left out of our Canadian history. Our exhibition stood as a reminder that Sikh stories are not separate from Canadian history. They are Canadian history.

It was also a special moment to meet Prime Minister Mark Carney and to share in an evening centered on remembrance, recognition, and the responsibility to move the story forward. (Image 2: Mark Carney signs Private Singh (2025) - Official First Day Cover)

Thank you as well to our friend of the museum, Senator Baltej Dhillon () , and to Ruby Sahota () , Iqwinder Gaheer () , and entire Sikh Caucus for helping make the evening possible and for arranging the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister. Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture Marc Miller () for the support of moving the Museums work forward.

This is the work ahead of us at the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada: to preserve truth, correct omission, and ensure Sikh contributions to this country are fully recognized and never written out again.

This is what it looks like when community shows up.

- Today we pause together to honour courage, sacrifice, and the stories that shape our shared freedoms.

Canada Post’s 2025 Remembrance Day stamp, Private Singh, recognizes Sikh soldiers who first served with the Canadian military in the First World War and all who have served since. More than a quarter of a million Sikh soldiers fought with Britain and its allies in the world wars. In Canada, discrimination kept many from enlisting, only 10 broke the barrier in WWI.

The stamp portrays a modern Canadian Sikh soldier paying respects, with Private Buckam Singh’s grave at Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener in the background of the stamp illustration. A design that bridges past and present and acknowledges stories long overlooked.

Designed by Larry Burke and Anna Stredulinsky (Burke & Burke) and illustrated by Parm Singh, the issue connects remembrance to inclusion.
